Weather outlook shows partly cloudy Sunday with scattered showers in the north and moderate southerly winds on the coast. Decatur band members Carl Gibson Jr Earl Pettey and David Fields attended an all state concert in Birmingham with director Carl Schwachow. Local hospital activity includes nine births at Decatur General and residents rehabbing after injuries. Community notices cover church and school events while residents travel to Oxford and Mt Zion for concerts and gatherings.
Rescue teams in Texas City continued to recover bodies from ruined plants and water where blasts from the Grandcamp and ensuing fires killed about 580 people and injured 3,000. Recovery efforts focused on the Monsanto and Humble facilities as fires burned and officials reduced explosion danger.
Plans for Cullman County Strawberry Festival run through committees of the festival association as the city decorates for two days of events. Visitors will be greeted by a massive electric strawberry on the water tower while Queen Blakemore VII Miss Jackie Wise leads a royal court including King George Fehler and six princesses.
Montgomery April 19 The Alabama legislature plans a three day interim session to review school relief proposals from education committees. Gov Folsom hints a second special session is likely but tied to a tax amendment, risking fall term funding. The issue remains whether to pair it with next week’s meetings or hold during the regular session recess.
Georgia's Democratic party divided into rival factions after Gov. Thompson called a party convention for April 30 in Macon to challenge Talmadge forces. The dispute centers on the county unit system and which faction will control the party ahead of next year's governor's election. Former Gov. Rivers and Virginia Polhill Price joined Thompson in demanding the convention, arguing for change to the nomination process.
The first report of marginalism in a two week telephone workers strike came Saturday from Decatur group manager Dwight L. Mixson. Five of six circuits from Decatur to Moulton were killed by wire cutting south of Hillsboro and again four miles south. Repairs completed by ten that same morning. Normal staffing in Decatur at 16 of 112, Athens near normal, Cullman reduced. Nine towns in the Decatur group, six with dial service unaffected.
Relatives in Decatur continued efforts Saturday to locate Louis G. Hoff missing since the Texas City disaster. Atlee H. Hoff arrived in Texas City and reported no sign of Louis or his assistant, who was seen entering the building to aid him. A Red Cross message listed Hoff as a patient at John Sealey General Hospital in Galveston.
Eleven miles from Galveston the Coast Guard probes the Grandcamp explosion cause while the disaster expands across the port. Memorial services are set for 6 P M with flowers from the Texas Florists Association and messages from ministers. The Red Cross raises the death toll to 580 as funeral plans unfold.
President Truman warned that a sharp price rise inflates the economy and ruled out immediate income tax reductions. He projected a fiscal-year surplus of 1.25 billion dollars, citing economies and price gains since controls were removed. He urged debt reduction while times are good. Washington April 19. Legislation to block emergency strikes by federal court injunction would lengthen to about 75 days. Both houses favor a measure to empower the Attorney General to seek a federal injunction against certain strikes, with debate over scope especially for steel. President Truman may veto, conference urged for a bill he will sign.
TVA reports nearly 30 million ton miles of freight on the Tennessee River in March 1947, the highest for any month. Petroleum products led traffic at about 56 percent, coal about 20 percent, and grain around 16 percent. First quarter 1947 ton miles rose about 47 percent from a year earlier, driven by long haul petroleum movements to Knoxville and larger barges raising average loads.
