Alabama courts and jury commissions move tentatively to revise juror rolls after the Scottsboro decision, with Gov Graves urging that negro names be added to rolls nationwide. Judges caution legal authority is needed, and actions await legislative authorization before fresh jury lists can be created.
Dr James Melester, president elect of the American Association, told Alabama doctors the medical field now treats the patient as a whole. Dr P L Chenault urged grade crossing removals to cut fractures and praised first aid training for drivers and attendants as a Godsend. The talk noted a rise in fracture cases and evolving surgery priorities.
County wide mass meetings continue to attract crowds. Last night events in Flint Trinity and Oak Ridge featured speakers E. L. Hayes and Prof. George T. Woodruff at Flint, O S Hagerman at Trinity, and F E Burleson at Oak Ridge. Resolutions backing the state education program were passed.
Fourteen year old Larry Harper died after a home made diving helmet failed in 29 feet of water at Davis's Hole My Creek. He tied a sash to his arm to test the device and sank while air failed to operate. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. John M. Harper of Fairhope.
After a day and a half of preliminary hearings the Alabama Public Service Commission tentatively set May 14 for the opening of testimony in the general investigation of telephone rates. The state seeks a 40 percent rate cut, while telephone company counsel warns of financial consequences. The commission also considers impounding 40 percent of revenues and bond measures to cover potential reductions, with additional motions and jurisdiction disputes among Southern Bell and related entities.
Decatur mayor James A Nelson proclaims Thursday April 18 as Straw Hat Day in 1935. Citizens may wear, destroy, or give away headpieces while no law forbids wearing other materials. Witness dated April 11 1935 with mayoral seal.
The Pan American Clipper Pioneer landed at Pearl Harbor on schedule at 7:75 p.m. Honolulu time after a 2,400 mile flight from Alameda California. The arrival followed a record east to west Pacific crossing and featured Navy escort planes and crowds watching from Waikiki Beach.
Morgan county officers probe how Henry Stewart was shot while in custody for a March 13 Ayres Filling Station robbery near Hartselle. A Columbus Mississippi sighting and a cartoon clipping found in Stewart’s suitcase prompt Sheriff Sandlin to share the clip and a photo with Columbus police, who offer no new light. Chief Morton notes the cartoon features Memphis Mayor Crump and is about two decades old.
Miss Louisa Watson of Hartselle died at Baugh's infirmary after an 11 year illness. She was a Methodist and had been cared for by the Memorial Clinic of Asheville. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 at the residence led by Rev. J. H. Chitwood. She is survived by her father T. M. Watson and three sisters, A C Cantrel, John W. Roberts, Beulah Watson, and an aunt Miss Julia Watson.
Frank Bunkley of Mobile, head of the Alabama VFW, says Senator Harrison’s compromise on adjusted compensation certificates likely won’t pass muster with ex-service men. He favors Patman’s bill for payment in new currency, noting population growth and inflation justify cash payments. He speaks at 7:30 pm at the courthouse.
In Anniston Alabama on April 17 charges of murder were filed against Lonnie Butler and John Hewett over the death of 63 year old Mrs Nannie White housekeeper for Probate Judge Thomas Coleman. Butler reportedly signed a statement accusing Hewett. Sheriff Pete Cotton said Butler has been jailed following a related shooting of Officer T H Cannon. Butler's brother in law R C Spear, who found Mrs White's body, is held as a material witness.
Sheriff J Street Sandlin Deputy Aaron Walton and Federal Officers Clem and Lamon led a raid six miles west of Decatur near the Lawrence county line. They seized two whiskey stills with capacities of 400 and 250 gallons and arrested two men on charges of manufacturing whiskey.
Police seek the driver of a car that struck and killed L. W. Gray 78, a yard engineer for the Southern Railway, after he left work last night. No witnesses to the accident. Gray was among Birmingham’s traffic victims this year.
From Greenville comes word of a rector and Mrs Bryan in Morgan County affected by prolonged illness. A second unnamed person also has been ill for several weeks, underscoring a period of health concern in the area.
Washington. Senator Harrison unveils a bond exchange bill to redeem adjusted service certificates dating to 1945 with 3 percent bonds maturing early and a 4 percent compounding option. The plan, costing up to 1.3 billion dollars, aims to widen currency liquidity and blocks general pension laws for veterans.
Montgomery April 17. A 7 to 2 vote by the legislative recess committee on judicial reform approved a bill giving preferred stockholders exclusive voting rights if dividends are unpaid for three months. The measure, by Leo Oberdorfer of Birmingham, would remove voting rights from common stockholders until arrears are paid and would be sent to the legislature reconvening April 30.
The League of Nations Council adopted a tri power resolution condemning Germany for repudiation of treaties with only Denmark abstaining. France Great Britain and Poland backed the measure to study possible economic and financial actions against future violators while Soviet and British delegates clashed over broader aims.
Maundy Thursday service at 7 30 p m in St John’s Episcopal Church with candle light communion led by Rev Peter M Dennis. All communicants urged to attend and others invited. A children’s service is planned Thursday at 4 00 p m at the same church.

Decatur Kiwanis Club will hold its weekly meeting Thursday led by Dr. Redding Emens as chairman with Roy Nash A. A. Jones Fred Smith and Dick Kennedy on the agriculture committee. A good speaker is expected and several leading farmers will attend as guests. The club voted $75 to the tubercular sanatorium at Flint.
Ohio Penitentiary Warden James C. Woodard announced that 978 of 1 056 convicts who struck Monday returned to work today after talks with the warden. The 78 holdouts will face the usual disciplinary measures, with past refusals leading to isolation in a cell block or solitary confinement.
Berlin officials expressed surprise as Poland voted for the Geneva censure resolution, while Germany aligned with the Stresa trio and Russia in backing the league measure. Officials noted disappointment at Argentina and other Latin American nations joining the Franco British Italian bloc.
Captain Leo Reardon brought the fishing boat Cambridge and a 175,000 id catch into Boston today. The craft was reported missing in the Bermuda vicinity, but the vessel has been accounted for and the crew is safe.
