The city ordinance bans dogs from running loose in Decatur but does not specify leash length. Wary guidance suggests avoiding passes by dogs on long leashes and keeping to sidewalks with caution around unleashed or long-leashed animals.
Richard Speck, 25, was found guilty by a Circuit Court jury of eight murders in Chicago last summer and the jurors recommended the death penalty by electric chair. The verdict followed 49 minutes of deliberation as public defender Gerald Getty vowed an appeal. Sentencing likely in Chicago after at least 30 days, with victims’ families leaving the Peoria courtroom in stoic disbelief.
Layman Maynard Layman of The Decatur Daily and William Roy Fite Jr of Gobble Fite Lumber Co were named to the Alabama Small Business Advisory Council for a two year term. Administrator Bernard L Boutin announced the appointments noting their knowledge of and interest in small business. The pair will attend semi annual meetings to assess needs and SBA program evaluations for Alabama.
A tense scene followed Wallace statements as a teen rushed out shouting misled while a young woman sobbed at the side entrance. State’s Atty John Stamos and chief prosecutor William J. Martin hurried from the courthouse as Getty, the last principal, said he had been with Richard and hinted at an appeal if appointed by the court.
A federal court in Montgomery refused to stay the statewide school desegregation order and criticized Governor Lurleen Wallace for eleven statements about the ruling. The judges said further delay is inconsistent with the law and noted copies of the order were sent to all 99 affected districts. Mrs. Wallace had urged sweeping powers for the state superintendent if the stay failed.
Morgan County and its cities stand to share more than 1 million dollars next year if the Senate does not amend the House passed road financing package. The plan would allocate 1,005,465 to the county with 202,588 for incorporated municipalities, while small counties fear reductions. The package includes a new gas tax distribution formula, increased car tag fees, and a 160 million road bond to match federal interstate funds.
New York and San Francisco hosted large peace rallies Saturday as more than 180,000 demonstrators from diverse backgrounds gathered nationwide. Draft-card burnings occurred but no major unrest, with about 125,000 in midtown Manhattan for five hours before a downpour dispersed the crowd.
