Judge James E. Horton asked every grand juror if anyone had tried to influence their deliberations and whether they could act fairly in cases pending investigation. He stressed the duty to administer justice impartially after killings in the county and warned against any attempts to derail the process.
Intensive spring campaign launched in north Alabama to immunize carriers of typhoid by inspecting specimens at the state laboratory spore and improving food handling practices.

In Kansas City on April 12 sweltering heat returned despite scattered showers. Dust clouds blanketed farms and cities as continued moisture shortage threatened crops. Light south Dakota rains offered a glimmer of relief while Missouri Iowa Nebraska Oklahoma and Texas faced unsettled forecasts for more rain and cooler conditions.
Jones Brown a black man was found guilty in Sumpter circuit court of first degree murder in the death of W Hall a cattleman. Ed Hall of Livingston and Memphis was held on 500 bond for assault with intent to murder after allegedly firing at Brown as he was taken from the courtroom. Hall is brother to the slain man and traveled from Memphis for the trial. Brown was moved from the county jail as authorities would not disclose precautionary steps amid high local tensions.
Plans move forward for a revival beginning the first Sunday in May at Southside Baptist Church. Rev. L. P. Royer of Nashville will preach and the campaign will run about two weeks.
Isleta New Mexico April 12 Efforts were under way to identify 19 bus passengers killed when a Greyhound bus was struck by a Santa Fe mail train at a crossing near Isleta. Ten others were injured as wreckage and bodies lay over 200 yards, with flames and gasoline burning clothing and parts of the bus. Names of 12 victims remained uncertain, identified only by letters and belongings.
J. M. Burnett superintendent of Tuscaloosa city schools was elected president of the Alabama Education Association in Montgomery. J. A. Keller of Covington County and L. Frazier Banks of Birmingham named new executive officers. G. S. Smith of Lamar County first vice president. W. J. Baird of Boyles High School second vice president. Miss Arine of Wetumpka third vice president.
Rabies was found in the head of a dog sent to the state laboratory by Mrs. J. H. LeMay of Town Creek. Miss Alma LeMay was bitten by the dog and received preventives, as did Mrs. LeMay and Miss Bettie Jean Thompson.
In Harrisonburg Louisiana Richard Grogan 45 is jailed after fatally shooting Andrew Womack 48 chief deputy sheriff of Catahoula parish during a tent search at a Lenomia Lumber camp on a Harrisonburg Jonesville highway. A trusted driver says Womack confronted Grogan and Grogan retrieved a shotgun firing at Womack who died shortly after.
Lamar W. York, a 36 year old federal prohibition agent, was shot and killed early today after arresting two men on a liquor charge. The suspects, described as negro, fled and one fired a single shot. Police later arrested two other negroes in connection with the shooting and hold them for investigation. York was a native of Nashville, Tennessee.
Straw hat time arrives in Decatur as the first of the spring apparel appears in shop windows. Locals glimpse the lighthearted fashion wave with hats described as felt cloches and styles like leghorns and milans. The season brings a sense of change as residents anticipate warmer days ahead.
Rev. Frank T. Smith, pastor of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church, has been confined to his room for a week with influenza but hopes to fill his pulpit at both services Sunday.
The extension department director at the University of Alabama will speak Sunday evening at 7 30 o'clock at St Timothy s church in Athens.
Washington April 11 Bishop James Cannon Jr of the Methodist Episcopal Church South wrote Chairman Caraway that he would be glad to appear before the senate lobby committee if information on the Methodist board of temperance and social service activities is desired.
Major Thomas J. Williamson a Confederate veteran and prominent Decatur resident died at his 402 Grant street home after days of illness. Survived by wife and four children in Texas North Carolina Tennessee and Alabama. Funeral set for 2 30 Sunday from Smith with City Cemetery interment. Pallbearers listed. Brown in charge.
The Westside Presbyterian Church holds its monthly meeting this Sunday at 2 30 o clock. Pastor Rev S P Pryor urged all members to attend.

Teak Walter’s gathering decorates an afternoon tea and Mr. and Mrs. B J Malone’s Enola Oaks home displays hundreds of tulips blooming along city streets and yards.
Rotary club announces the Hobby Fair with Colonel Sterchi donating a registered bull as a prize for top handiwork by rural children. The Sterchi organization provides the Aycock building on Ferry street for the event, running April 25 and 26 with exhibits from Lawrence and nearby counties. Educational authorities back the first such fair here aiming to educate teachers and students across three counties.
Congress conferees finalize tariff schedules on cotton flax hemp and jute with a new ten cent per pound levy on long staple cotton except rags and an increased duty on tobacco. The agreement restores the current rate on cotton sewing thread and caps duties on plain cotton cloth yarns above No 9 with a rate near one half of one percent per 100 yards.
In Tuscaloosa on April 11 the jury in Floyd Fitts deputy’s liquor transport case was deadlocked and a mistrial declared. Aubrey Payne deputy awaiting trial for violation of prohibition laws also had a mistrial. Waldo Morrison was found guilty but awaits sentencing. Three other officers’ trials were postponed due to court duties.
Mason McDougal a well known Decatur citizen was seen mingling with friends in the city this afternoon.
Tennessee officials allegedly ordered Alabama trucks to carry Tennessee licenses while Tennessee operators haul goods into Alabama. Many Tennessee trucks may face higher costs as Alabama routes see cross border traffic. If Tennessee enforces its tag rule on Alabama trucks, a revival of the reciprocity pact between the states could occur.
The Alabama Power Company's proposal to extend the city's white way along Lee Street should receive definite action when the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meets next Thursday evening. The council tabled final approval last meeting, with the extending committee led by Alderman Roy Billings ordered to continue its investigation.
Farmers of Morgan county conclude a six day work week with extensive plowing and planting. Hundreds of acres seeded to cotton and corn during the period. favorable weather suggests another strong crop year ahead.
County politicians enter serious campaigning as April nears its midpoint with May approaching. Within three or four weeks county offices will begin active contest for state and national races, adding heat to the existing political fray in Decatur.
Representative La Guardia of New York warns the senate lobby committee has not obtained all the facts in the Muscle Shoals inquiry. He predicts the biggest national scandal if the American Cyanamid bid for Alabama projects is revived, noting ties to jam through Congress.
Police continue to hunt thieves after a break in at the offices of Mayor B. L. Malone on Lee Street. Officers have no leads yet but state arrests may be made as the investigation proceeds.
The school of music will open Monday evening April 21 with strong interest. The introductory session will continue about ten days as classes begin.
