Sunday was partly cloudy with warmer air in central portions and a cooler Monday with scattered showers. Local weather reports noted a high of 61 and a low of 48 with 22 inches of rainfall. Community updates include births, hospital moves, church events, Rotary activities, and service notices from Morgan County and surrounding areas.
Washington April 10 Speaker Martin moved quickly to arrange a peace parley between John L Lewis and Ezra Van Horn to settle the coal strike. Attorney General Clark said the government will press contempt charges against Lewis Monday despite the parley. The pension dispute over miners welfare fund drew Martin into talks with Bridges and Van Horn, with Lewis chairing the fund trustees. See COAL On Page 2.
Western authorities resisted new Soviet efforts to curb the Berlin Western Allies air corridor and cross zone communications. Moscow proposed air safety rules including night flight bans and 24 hour prior approval, while refusing to renew passes for signal corps crews maintaining lines between Berlin and the Western zones.
Sheriff C. B. Humphrey reports a grand trip from El Paso where he attended a Sheriffs National Association meeting. Speakers included Hugh Clegg of the FBI and James A. Johnson of Alcatraz. Sheriffs from across the United States toured areas of Mexico with hearty remarks about the hospitality.
A $50 check to The Daily launches a reader aid project for the Haynie family after Christine Haynie, a farm mother, was strangled. The crippled husband and six children face hardship with welfare at $40 monthly. Capt. Oscar Fuller of the Salvation Army will oversee the funds to help the family as they cope with loss and tough times.
The U N Security Council blocked Italy’s admission with a Russian veto the third time, while Burma’s bid for membership passed 10 to 0 with Argentina abstaining. Italy’s vote stood 9 to 2 with Russia and the Soviet Ukraine opposing amid postwar Cold War tensions and Italian elections looming.
Randolph Ryan of Cotaco will lead the Morgan County Teachers Association next year after his election as president at Friday’s meeting. New officers include Mrs. Faye Parker of Hartselle as next year’s president, Mrs. Grace M. Watson of Hartselle as secretary treasure, and E. C. McDaniel of Union Hill among delegates.
Montgomery houses bid opening set for May 14 for a Decatur built Coliseum on Courtland Road. Agricultural Center Board authorized Moreland Smith to advertise for bids on a 100 by 100 arena with cattle sheds while prefabricated plans replace the original costly design.
Probate Judge T. C. Almon announced that absentee ballots are ready and will be mailed Wednesday. Applications by mail are encouraged with ballots to be returned at least five days before the election to be counted.
President Mariano Ospina Perez declared martial law to quell a revolution that sparked bloodshed in Bogota and disrupted the Inter American conference. Vice President Eduardo Santos said a new cabinet will be shared by liberals and conservatives with Ospina Perez remaining president. About 100 Americans, including conference delegates, were evacuated from embassy offices as unrest spread to neighboring nations.
Work has begun on a 50 by 118 foot two story annex facing Johnston Street. The project, led by contractor Elkton Reeves and a building committee including C. E. Poole Nathan Pryor and Judge J H Crow, aims for occupancy by October. The brick and stone annex will add 30 classrooms three large assembly rooms two kitchens and expand Cen Baptist facilities to a major church plant in the region.
Republicans of the eighth district plan a fish supper and a meeting in Morgan county on Thursday night to revitalize the party and discuss open positions after November. Key speakers include Lonnie Noojin Claude Vardeman and Charles Roberson. Reservations are not required.
In Atlanta on April 10 194? Dixie state party chairmen meet at Columbia South Carolina to discuss President Truman's civil rights program. W P Baskin Georgia and state chairs plan to protect states rights and decide action against the program with expected attendance from Mississippi Arkansas Virginia Alabama and others.
At a Friday night meeting the City Board of Education authorized Superintendent Walter Jackson to grant a $50 supplement to any teacher who completes a full quarter of summer school. The board also approved a $100 yearly salary raise for all teachers, funded mainly by higher state education revenues, to retain and improve Decatur's teaching staff.
Arab field guns bombarded the western suburbs of Jerusalem as fighting for the highway to the Holy City intensified. From Judean mountain positions, eight 25 pound shells struck Givat Shaul near Deir Yassin, with casualties reported on both sides as Kastel remained a key objective in the weeklong clash along the coastal road.
In Mobile Alabama Gov James E Folsom heads the anti walkout group for Alabama delegates to the Democratic national convention He will fight Trumans civil rights program and oppose renomination but will not walk out If the convention adopts an unacceptable platform he proposes an elected Alabama democracy convention to decide the partys course Attorney General Albert Carmichael former Gov Chauncey Ne and U S Senator Lister Hill align with Folsom against Truman on states rights concerns
The Decatur high school band won the superior rating in Class B at a statewide competition held at the University of Alabama. They also earned superior in sight reading, performing three pieces including Air Waves Ariane and Marche Slave before returning home with the group of eighty three travelers. The band plans to enter Class A next year.
In Tuscaloosa yesterday bands from Lanier Montgomery and Gadsden high placed in division one of class A. Division one honors went to Tuscaloosa county high Emma Sansom high and Decatur high for class B. Tuscaloosa junior high earned first division rating in class D. Jacksonville high entered alone in class C. Bands are grouped by school enrollment with entries from Gadsden high and Lanier high Montgomery in class A and others in B and D.
The Decatur Board will ask the City Council to authorize 1.5 million dollars in bonds for new schools without raising taxes. Walter M. Jackson outlined plans for a West Decatur elementary and a West Decatur junior senior high, plus renovations to Riverside, Gordon Bibblemen, Lafayette street, and Joe Wheeler sites, with several buildings demolished and land landscaped.
Sheriff C B Humphrey said he had a statement to make about the Haymie strangulation with county officials still investigating. James Lester Lang of Lacon remains held on first degree murder in connection with Mrs Christine Hay death as the state toxicologist awaits tests to determine criminal wed.
