Partly cloudy to cloudy with showers in extreme east tonight cooler in west and north areas Sunday partly cloudy with moderate northerly winds on the coast. Local news items include Decatur area social notes, Legion meetings at 7 30, and a burglary report at Sunshine Cleaners with $15 taken and no oil heater losses.
Morgan County authorities, with county state and federal officers, raided the Poorhouse Hollow area east of Hartselle early Saturday, seizing a two-still operation with 210 gallons daily capacity. Monroe J. Cooper and Ray Rooks were taken. additional stills were found nearby as lawmen documented the largest Morgan County distilling crackdown in memory.
Two Attalla foundry employees, Woodrow Richard Tucker aged 37 and Charles Dean aged 35, drowned when their fishing boat capsized below the Guntersville TVA dam. Rescue efforts failed as water currents overwhelmed life preservers. coroner H. B. Harden identified the victims.
In Korea on the central front near the Pukhan river north of Chunchon, Chinese Reds suddenly turned and repelled an American assault after two days of retreat. AP's William C. Barnard notes 17 units from one American division were engaged in the ridge action.
A Southwest Airways DC-3 crashed on a 20 minute Coastal Mountain flight from Santa Maria to Santa Barbara killing all 22 aboard. Capt. John R. Aidem said rescue teams confirmed the full death toll. Most victims were service members including four colonels.
Robinson Furniture company will open for business Monday in its new location at 510 Second Avenue. Paul Robinson announced the move after remodeling all three floors and the storefront to provide larger, more spacious quarters than the former Bank Street location. Visitors are invited to inspect the new store.
The Decatur Daily corrects a report stating Curtis Allred and Wyman Hamilton were held on whiskey charges. Hamilton faced driving while intoxicated and Allied with resisting arrest and public drunkenness. Both were released on bond. the paper apologizes for the error.
Diplomats across Tokyo Taipei and Washington express mixed views on extending the Korean War to the Chinese mainland. Some admire General MacArthur while others urge restraint preferring a limited war and seeking peace prospects in Korea.
Republican leaders in the House face a delay as the Senate approved a four division troop use proposal for Eisenhower's European army but with a requirement for congressional consultation. The measure sits in the Foreign Affairs Committee and may be kept there. GOP leaders consider amending a draft bill to ban or restrict troop deployment without Congress approval, while seeking a substitute bill without universal military training provisions.
Construction bids for the entire Decatur Moulton road are expected in May, according to S. W. Harbin chief of plans and surveys for the state Highway Department. Plans for the Lawrence county portion are now being processed to qualify for federal participation after a bid was cancelled earlier by State Highway Director Guerry Pruett as impractical.
The bullet riddled body of Nadine Mageeres 38, a former Decatur resident, was found in a deserted car Friday night in Leroy township near the Leroy tavern along Route 86 southeast of Painesville Ohio. Sheriff Cage sought her husband Ben for questioning. the car bore Georgia plates and was spotted by milk truck driver Clifford Pike.
In the Tennessee Valley beef cattle show the 4 H girls claimed the grand reserve champion and two breed titles while the grand champion went to Keenan Wood of Cullman. Mary Emily Reynolds of Madison won the reserve grand champion. See BETTER On Page 2.
The Decatur Housing Authority will start accepting bids Monday for East Acres a 145 unit low rent housing development to be built between Sixteenth and Nineteenth Avenues south of Beech Street in East Decatur. The plan calls for 45 brick and hollow tile buildings with paved streets fire protection and sidewalks. Architects Albert R Frahn & Associates will provide plans and specs available at their office and the Housing Authority 5024 Second Avenue.
The Limestone Board of Revenue and Control reversed a Saturday order raising the county gasoline tax by two cents after public pressure. The hike would have started April 15 to raise funds for paving about $1,000,000 in Limestone roads. Spence warned further revenue steps were needed but no specific plan was discussed amid protests by gasoline and oil interests claiming the tax would push Limestone gasoline to second highest in the nation and harm tourism and local dealers.
Ingalls Shipbuilding attempt to close the lower end of West Market Street failed as the City Council informal vote agreed not to vacate the street. At a second meeting witnesses including W. B. Neher and Gerald W. Neher spoke against the closing.
Red Cross drive chairman Allen Rooks reports 1576.34 collected in the final day of the organized drive. The effort ends though contributions will continue to be accepted as Saturday showers hindered plans by the 1343rd Engineers Auxiliary to set up sidewalk tables in Decatur Hartselle and Falkville.
