Maurice Anderson Wins Swift Essay Contest Prize

Maurice Anderson was named a winner in the 1936 87 Swift Essay Contest open to all F F A members in the United States. Twelve boys prepared essays and were judged by three professors from the University of Minnesota. He received a $5 check from G F Swift president of Swift and Co Chicago.

Dawson County Opens 12 Mile Concrete Road Link to Chestatee

Dawson County began paving with Cobb Construction Co pouring concrete on Route 63 toward The work connects Dawsonville to No 9 asphalt route and will run twelve miles to the Chestatee River at the Dawson Hall county line. Traffic to Gainesville must detour via Dahlonega or Silver City.

A light vote in Dawson county on the 8th saw five amendments carry while liquor was rejected locally. High Shoals had no election due to 12 registered voters. Chain Store Tax License Deadlines Set

The Chain Store Tax Act requires operators of all stores to apply for a license and pay the license fee by June 30. The tax starts at $2 for the first store, $10 for the second, $15 for the third, and $5 more per store up to the twentieth reaching $100. all stores beyond the fortieth are taxed at $200 each.

The State Highway Dept invites sealed concrete paving bids for 8 508 miles of the Gainesville Dawsonville highway from West Washington Street to the Sidney Lanier bridge over the Chattahoochee River. Bids open June 18 in Atlanta. One remaining gap in Hall county will be paved later this year.
