Congressman Whelcher closed his Gainesville office on December 24 to return to Washington for official duties. He spent the recess in the district, visiting constituents, and traveling to cover as much ground as possible. He invites correspondence from those he did not meet who need aid or representation.
Georgia has paid all past due appropriations using a $1.69 million treasury fund enabling the state to emerge from debt. The largest outstanding debt was $26 million in Highway Department certificates, to be paid to counties at $2.6 million annually starting 1936. The state owed $7.52 million when Talmadge took office.
Walter Pirkle died December 20 1985 at twenty three. A Dawsonville High School graduate class of 1981 he attended North Georgia College for one year. Funeral December 21 at home conducted by Rev Blackburn with burial at Lumpkin Cemetery. Survived by his mother Minnie Pirkle and two sisters Bonnelle and Lois. pallbearers named. Classmate offers sympathy.
