Community notes report numerous relatives and friends visiting Dahlonega Athens Atlanta Roswell Clermont Gainesville and Chicago. Events include birthdays Easter sunrise services and a Co op meeting prize winner among residents and family gatherings across multiple towns.
All day singing invitation at Sweet water Baptist Church next Sunday. Several local families and visitors from Alpharetta Atlanta Buford Tucker Cumming Tate Lawrenceville Augusta and Chamblee are listed as attendees and guests. Community members Rev Rufus Evans and Mrs Dewey Goswick noted among organizers and visitors.
Mrs Gene Barnett and children return to Albany after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Jack Looper. Families including the Suttons Alpharetta Taylors and Stephenss are listed as Sunday visitors and numerous neighbors are noted visiting various households. Mrs Ernest Gober returns home from Hall Co hospital and is progressing well.
John Alfred Witherow aged 65 of Cummings Ga Rt 1 died in a private hospital after a long illness. Survived by his wife four daughters one son one brother three sisters and many grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Harmony Baptist Church with Rev C B Gazawey and Rev Frank Vaughn officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. Vickers handled arrangements.
Mrs. Martha Vaughters Parks aged 93 8 months died at her Lumpkin County home on a Saturday in April Funeral services were held April 3 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev Jary Boling officiating Interment followed at the church cemetery Survivors include one son Porter Parks seven daughters and several grandchildren and great grandchildren She would have turned 100 in July 1961 Vickers Funeral Home Dahldhegain handled arrangements
Special guest column by Tom Sellers of the Columbus Ledger. He describes a two part series on Georgia travel and notes his role as chair of the Columbus-Muscogee Civil War Centennial Committee, sponsor of the event discussed.
Columbus hosts The Gallant City pageant April 26 and 27 at Municipal Auditorium with hundreds in mid nineteenth century costumes. The Columbus Guards re create 1838 post origins and escort past presidents. A Civil War exhibit opens March 1 at the Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts with relics and gunboat drawings.
The Dawson County Board of Education met on Tuesday April 4 1961 to review safer and more economical school transportation. A follow up session is set for Tuesday April 11 1961 to survey bus lines by riding them and gather details on routes road conditions and line lengths to promote a more efficient bus system.
