Ideal weather highlighted the opening mixed foursome event at Dauphin Country Club on Friday with play from 4 p.m. The aggregation scores reached 213 for first, 214 second, and 219 for third while a tea served in the club house followed under Mrs J J Bowman’s direction.
The Yadvy Golf Club held the season’s first silver tea at the course. The event raised $1475, funding much needed club equipment. Mrs J L Newman led the pretty tea table with assistants Misses Elen Bowman and Beth Nowe, as members enjoyed a lively afternoon amid a busy club house.
Favorable weather boosts the openice meet with President versus Vice-President on May 24. The President side wins by three points as many Members participate. Dauphin Intermediates show low scores around 140 while Curtis posts 39 45 8 4. Club house nearing completion with opening date to be announced.
The Dauphin Bowling Club opened on the 24th with WJ McPhee defeating WJ McConnell in the final 9 to 7. McPhee was accompanied by D D McDonald John Haddrell and Mrs. Chase while runners up included Mrs. Curtis C Gray and Mrs. Cousins.
The 1929 Dauphin Lawn Bowling Club roster lists rinks and floaters for the June season opening on Monday June 3. Notable names include McConnell as skip, Gunne as third, Haddrell second, Goddard lead, plus many members and three from Gilbert Plains. One green remains vacant on Tue Wed and Fri each week with deferred games urged to those nights.
On May 22 at St. James United Church Misses B Wallace and G Lee hosted a pupil recital in piano and violin. An interested crowd applauded efforts with several true talents evident among the solos. Helen Eastman opened with a Welcome Song and an orchestra led by Miss Lee closed the program after two parts of piano and violin performances by a list of pupils.
A large Orange Order gathering at Oddfellow's Hall heard Capt. Thos. Smith of Winnipeg Grand Organizer discuss the Orange movement as organized Protestantism guided by high ideals. Rev. F. C. Middleton chaired. musical numbers by Mrs. S. Kinters Mrs. J. Olphant and W. Caldwell preceded the address.
About 119000 young salmon trout were shipped from the Winnipegosis government hatchery to Clear Lake last Thursday the 23rd to stock the new Riding Mountain recreation area for anglers. The fish weighed about 85 pounds per load in forty cans and were released at midnight after a 12 hour rail and road journey, with expected growth to 3 to 4 pounds in two years.
Obituary reports the death of Coover Henry Lawrence at age 73 on May 27 in Pauphin Ontario-born, Manitoba resident since 1888. Survived by four sons and two daughters, funeral held at his farm with Rev. Middleton officiating and interment at Riverside cemetery. Pallbearers named. Also notes collegiate closing exercises at Dauphin Mackenzie school with speeches, medals, and performances.
Two night Jamsboree events by the B P O Elks at the town hall drew large crowds with about 553 attendance first night and 500 second night. Proceeds go to the Kiddies Day fund. Prizes included a silver tesse yee won by Henry Artibesch and a marble clock won by Ernie Whiteman. Bruce Little placed in the housie contest and A Clarkson led the old time fiddlers’ contest.
Norma Christina Kemp of Dauphin died at home on May 24 after a brief illness with valvular heart disease. Born in Carleton Place Ontario she moved to Dauphin as an infant and lived there since. The funeral was at Grace Church conducted by Rev Fred C Middleton with burial in Riverside cemetery. Pallbearers included W Felker K McQuarrie G McQuarrie M Finnen Rob Scott and Walter Scott. Survived by her mother four brothers Wallace Ernest Wesley William all of Dauphin two sisters Olive of Dauphin and Mrs F McNeely of Smith Falls Ontario. Floral tributes came from Spruce Bluff Sunday School Telephone staff and Spruce Bluff Sewing Circle.

Joint boards approve extensive alterations at Grace Church to serve as worship space for the united St James and Grace United congregations. Plans include removing an archway, moving a chimney, expanding seating to 600, enlarging the choir loft, adding porches, overhauling heating, and redecorating. Estimated cost 1200 dollars with work in July and August.
The Ste. Rose group formed to participate in the Manitoba Livestock Credit Company Limited sheep program. The organizing committee includes J. Bourgeois of the Royal Bank Rev. A. E. Theoret Oscar Armchambeault Leonard Flower and Pierre Laurette. A May 22 meeting at Ste. Rose du Lac, led by Rev. Theoret, saw many plan to apply for participation.
W Johnston former secretary treasurer of Dauphin appeared before Magistrate Hawkins on a charge of stealing 7170 21 dollars while in municipal service between 1921 and 1929. He was remanded and released on bail of 7559 dollars until May 31 1929.
On May 16 Aaron Botney of Keld appeared before William Gossell J.P. in McCreary charged with driving while intoxicated. He was fined 25 dollars and costs and his car impounded for two days with a further Hauer act charge pending. Edward Charron of McCreary was sentenced on May 27 to three years in the penitentiary for offences against young girls. C S A Bowers IOC prosecuted.
