Dauphin Sports Day Highlights Weekend Activities

May 24 at Dauphin featured a full holiday of sport with the Dauphin Bowling Club opening its 1930 season a mixed tournament and social Tennis and Country clubs hosting events. A football match between a Dauphin selection and the CNRs of Winnipeg concluded the day as Little defeated Cooke in the final frame after a day of rounds and byes.

President wins country club competition over vice president

At the Country Club course on the afternoon of the 24th the president Dr J R Genne defeated vice president W D King by one point in a president versus vice president golf competition. Scores show each game won awarding a point to the winning side and tea followed the event with Mrs A Katz and Mrs W D King directing. A June series was announced to establish fair handicaps and improve member acquaintance.

Members will play an 18 hole medal event on Friday May 30. Ladies choose their own partners and must hand score cards to a Draw Committee member such as Mrs. McLachlin Mrs. Campbell or Mrs. Wallwin.

Winnipeg Nationals Triumph in Dauphin Friendly Match

A medium crowd watched Winnipeg Nationals edge Dauphin 3 2 in a tight friendly on Saturday May 24 with a late scrimmage goal. Belton opened for Dauphin, Hardie equalized for Winnipeg, Lennie headed the go ahead goal, and Davis and other keepers impressed. Dauphin showed strong play despite five seniors on Winnipeg, and both teams received solid performances from listed players.

A silver tea and sale of home cooking will be held Saturday May 31 from 3 to 6 in St James Church. The event is organized under the auspices of the Ladies Aid of the United Church.

Dauphin Hosts Inaugural Musical Festival

Dauphin held Canada's first Dauphin Music Festival in the town hall on Friday. With 60 plus entries from Dauphin district and nearby towns, the event drew strong local participation and featured adjudicator Miss Ethel Kinley of Winnipeg and director A Marshall Neal guiding the showcases and prize ceremonies. Shields awarded for winning choirs and solos highlight a promising, annual festival future.

Rev E W Johnson Receives Doctor of Divinity Degree

Rev E W Johnson a Dauphin district figure received the honorary Doctor of Divinity from Pine Hill Divinity Hall Halifax at its convocation. He has aided Manitoba church development for 32 years, arriving at Swan River valley in spring 1898 with the first settlers and six families on the north side of Duck Mountain.

Mrs Darlington Shot In Mountain Accident

Mrs Stanley Darlington was accidentally shot in the right arm and breast by a shotgun blast during an inspection trip on a mountain near town. She was taken to Harley Armstrongs and then to hospital where pellets were removed. she remains in serious condition.

Assault and Robbery at Winnipegosis

A break in at the poolroom of William Walmsley in Winnipegosis left caretaker Mike Verhosky severely beaten and robbed of 70 dollars. He is hospitalized in Dauphin with head injuries and uncertain if one or more assailants acted. Provincial police investigate but have found no clues as yet.

Mrs Jas B Robson dies after illness in May

Mrs Jas B Robson died shortly before noon on Wednesday May 28 after a six week illness and an operation on March 14. She leaves her husband and three children. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Death of Early Dauphin Resident R D Gibson at Melfort

Robert Dick Gibson, once of Dauphin and owner of the Strang farm on the Lake road before 1908, died at Melfort on Saturday evening May 17 after a brief illness. Born April 23 1848 near Galt Ontario he was 82 years. Survived by his wife and four children, including Lottie deceased, and siblings in the Yukon and Ontario.

Juvenile Court Convicts Two For Sidewalk Riding

Harold Slind visited the city over the weekend. Two youths were convicted in Juvenile Court on Tuesday for riding on sidewalks. Police plan to prosecute similar infractions in the future under the sidewalk riding ban.

Government to spend 100000 on Riding Mountain park

Ottawa reports the federal government will invest about 100000 this year to develop Riding Mountain National Park. The plan includes forestry work, tree planting, a golf course at Clear Lake, parking, drainage, and road construction to improve access for Manitoba residents and U.S. tourists.
