At 199 am on a Wednesday the Venezuelan airliner over the Atlantic jettisoned fuel and burned. Passersby described a fireball in the right wing as the craft fell to the water. Searchers found no survivor among 74 victims including 24 Venezuelan children returning home for vacation.
Three Canadian provinces voted to keep or extend control in general elections. New Brunswick elected Premier Hugh John Fleming’s Progressive Conservatives to 37 seats while Liberals took the rest. Quebec and Saskatchewan also returned governments with larger or smaller majorities. In Quebec the Union Nationale won 72 seats, Liberals 19, while Saskatchewan saw the CCF re-elected with 35 seats, Liberals 13, and Social Credit 3. Prime ministers gathered in London for a conference on foreign affairs and NATO expansion.
Reginald E. Forbes a Dauphin born University of Manitoba graduate is appointed principal and agricultural representative of the Agriculture and Homemaking school at Brandon. The appointment will take effect July 1 and follows his recent work as agricultural representative at Pilot Mound where he organized Manitoba’s first Save the Soil club and the annual sale of purebred cattle.
Dauphin area board chairman Cecil R Durston lambasts the provincial government for abandoning a prior policy on school area grants. He argues larger area plans will pressure the government to maintain or increase funding while reducing pushback against consolidations. He cites rising grants per teacher and regional assessments to urge more areas formed in the province.
The town council and chamber of commerce pushed industrial growth with a plan to partner with Steinbach officials and explore a Western plant site. Campbell Soup Ltd shows interest in Manitoba locations as Dauphin is highlighted as a central, ship-friendly farming hub for potential cannery needs.
The Horticultural Society stages a peony show this Friday in the former Wallace jewellery store. Despite heavy rains the peonies remain sturdy. Entries open on show day until 11 am with prizes for best three blooms and best single bloom in junior and general categories.
The Dauphin travellers' parade celebrates ten years with a July 24 gala. Aimed at top bands, colorful floats, and eye catching displays, preparations focus on a noon start at Henderson School, moving through River Avenue, Main Street, Fourth Avenue, and ending at the fair grounds main entrance.
This week records a high of 82.9 degrees on June 20 and a low near 51 to 52 degrees by June 26. Daily highs mostly in the 60s to 80s with minima in the 50s, total weekly precipitation 2.43 inches including a 1.38 inch downpour on June 22.
Manitoba education minister W. C. Miller spoke at the Mani toba School Trustees Association regional convention in Henderson auditorium. He defended his administration and urged broader adoption of the Dauphin Ochre style area plan to ensure rural children access to the same high school courses as in Winnipeg. He rejected charges of teacher shortages and called for shared responsibility to improve education.
A delayed action bomb disguised as ten unaccredited delegates from Grandview detonated, wrecking much of the MFAC district conclave. Denial of voting rights sparked a two camp split and a walkout amid recriminations. Present were ten Grandview appointee delegates and ten elected MFAC delegates from Grandview.
The Independent Grocers' Alliance opens its first Dauphin supermarket this week in the J. Buckwold & Sons site on Main Street South near First Avenue Southwest. Owned by W. T. Hadway, the Hadway IGA Super Market offers air conditioning free parking self serve meats and modern fixtures. Opening begins at 9 30 this morning with a grand event continuing to Saturday evening.
Twenty six patrol boys from Henderson and Whitmore schools toured RCMP facilities led by Sgt. G C Shook. They viewed fingerprinting, plaster facial casts, and a dark room, studied a manhunt map, and rode in a patrol car with ice cream to end the visit.
Harley Armstrong was returned to the 1956 57 term as president of regional convention No 22 of the Manitoba School Trustees association at Henderson auditorium last Wednesday. W T Volkers E Johansen were re elected as vice president and secretary treasurer with an array of executive members listed including R C Johnston Mowat L Boris Dauphin Plains P Kaminski Ripon Louis Kennedy Sijfton Mrs R Houston Ochre River. A J Thiessen Rosenfeld urged stronger unity and predicted all school boards would join the association, arguing that unity with farmers co operatives unions and business organizations yields benefits and could shift government attitude.
Plans for the annual Elks Regatta on the civic holiday August 6 include a first time long distance swimming race sponsored by the local BPOE lodge with special awards. Queen contest efforts are noted in three regions with candidates Adel Maslove Roblin Audrey Sandstrom Miamnedosa Pat Pollen Dauphin.
George Bumstead was installed as president of the Dauphin Lions Club for the 1956 57 term at a year end meeting. The ceremony named Don Ray as first vice president and listed other officers and directors. Highlights included convention reports, donations to the library, eye glasses for a needy person, and plans for local projects and fundraising.
