Reported flash points trace the controversy around Miss Hofmans and Queen Juliana to the royal circle in 1948. Prince Bernhard allegedly barred Hofmans, widening the rift as government officials insist such private matters do not draw state action.
President Eisenhower and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer met at the president's hospital bed. The talks lasted about ten minutes as Eisenhower showed steady progress from his abdominal operation and discussed German reunification.
Fort Garry delegate at the Manitoba urban association meeting objects to the new hospital rates calling the scheme a collection agency for hospitals. St Vital reports hospital costs up since 1955 while Portage la Prairie regulators urge streamlining and cooperation between municipality and hospitals. Dr Fisher outlines that many services should be kept if possible.
The June 11 report shows Dauphin elevators received 611000 bushels of all grains for 1955 56, with total year deliveries estimated at 756000 bushels. Compared with 1954 55 it trails by 69000 bushels, yet exceeds 1953 54 figures, and storage stands at 420000 bushels with 296000 more space.
Strong winds limited the turnout to 11 airplanes but drew 92 friends from Portage la Prairie Brandon Winnipeg Yorkton Ste. Rose and Melita. Irene Cooper piloted a Aeronca Chief with a passenger from Winnipeg. Guests included Mayor S E McLean chamber president J E Burton and Royal Flying Club official Libby McPherson.
The Dauphin public library expands its footprint by about 250 square feet with 450 extra feet of shelving after a new layout with the Legion. The move shifts Legion quarters upstairs to a side entrance. New books total 35. May registrations rise with 43 members and 45 non residents in May. story hour winds down with a June 23 reading.
Dauphin fairgoers will see 18 highly trained canines in the three day Parade of Stars show at the Summer Exhibition Grandstand. Kirk Adams displays his dogs performing ladders, poles, cartwheels and other feats with timing that sometimes precedes the trainers.
Dauphin hosts its annual July 2 baseball bonanza with an A class invitational and a B tournament for smaller towns. The event reverts to classic formats, adds fastball for men and women, increases prize money, and lowers gate admission to 70 cents for adults and 50 cents for children. Ed Johansen and Andy Newton invite teams to enter by phone, mail, or in person as entries are encouraged with no entry fee and refreshments on the grounds.
All boys who wish to play baseball during July and August are asked to report to the arena on Monday June 25 at 4 o clock. There will be an organizational meeting and captains and teams will be chosen. If you cannot be present, give your name to a friend to be placed on a team. Rules will be discussed with teens league and little league.
A Dauphin rainfall record sets a one day total of 3.95 inches on Monday June 18, surpassing the 1941 3.11 inch mark. The week total reached 3.99 inches with traces on June 15 and June 16 and 0.03 inches on June 19. The week’s high was 85.0 degrees on June 17 and the low 41.7 on June 15.
A Tuesday deluge flooded McCreary and Laurier farm lands with the Vermillion river washing over fields and ditches. No. 5 highway near Ste. Rose and No. 19 highway in Riding Mountain were submerged and closed. Dauphin area drains and bridges suffered damage while Dauphin’s park was submerged two thirds. Crops in McCreary face renewed losses for the fourth year in a row.
The Dauphin Ethelbert and Ste Rose 4 H rally opens the Dauphin Summer Fair on Monday July 23 and expands to include Roblin and Swan River rally districts in an inter club program. Dauphin joins four provincial inter club rally HQs in the new format.
Miss Mary Maxim Ltd led by W S McPhedrain announces a U S A branch in Port Huron Michigan under Miss Mary Maxim Inc with W M McPhedrain as manager moving W G ing to manager and adding Bill Pickett as comptroller and Robi Borland as assistant advertising manager.
Bill LeBlanc head of the Canadian Red Cross water safety service told Dauphin Rotary and Lions clubs that 750 Canadians drown yearly, mostly accidentally. He outlined provincial safety committees, dry rescue techniques, and a push to teach children to swim and safety rules, noting 594 instructors trained since 1946 and continued efforts to reduce drownings.
The rural municipality of Dauphin approved 9700 dollars for Ward 3 road improvements. Five thousand eight hundred dollars covers building grant roads over six miles, two thousand five hundred dollars for rebuilding eight miles with ditch digging, one hundred dollars for half a mile of regravelling, and one thousand four hundred dollars for grading and gravelling the Sifton to Lake Dauphin road.
Town switches to the smaller upper reservoir after a flood damaged the main reservoir gate. Engineer E. M. Erickson said the upper reservoir with five million gallons should meet needs until the larger gate is repaired, and there is no cause for concern.
Six scholarships were presented at the Smith Jackson school auditorium to grade 7 and 8 pupils marking the close of the 1955 56 term. The Dauphin Elks Lodge awarded W J Henderson scholarships to four top scholars while the Lions Club gave James McKay memorial awards to the top improving students in grade 8.
Grade 5 Whitmore school boy patrol led by Captain Billy Chawron won the RCMP shield for the second consecutive year. Mayor S. E. McLean and Lions Club officials praised the patrol after the ceremony in which the National Anthem and O Canada were sung by grade 4 and 5 pupils. Certificates were awarded to Lieut. David Main and other patrol members, with Sgt. G. C. Shook emphasizing RCMP authority.
