Reports from The Statesman describe heavy casualties in Poznan as a strike escalates into a riot with armed factions, tanks, and violent street clashes. The scene spreads to New Delhi and Budapest with protests and clashes tied to Moscow’s influence.
Reports describe a June 27 28 nightlong Hungarian demonstration against Matyas Rakosi the Hungarian Communist leader. Simultaneous notes from New Delhi mention rebellion sweeping eastern Tibet with Chinese forces in retreat from the Biam Gorek region near Lhasa amid heavy losses on both sides.
Prime Minister St Laurent spoke in London inviting the Queen to Canada in three years for the St Lawrence Seaway inauguration and a nationwide tour. He attended the centenary parade of Victoria Cross winners in Hyde Park and the Commonwealth prime ministers conference at No 10 Downing Street. Elections in Egypt and Iceland drew Western World attention.
A 21 strong Dauphin Army Cadet unit leaves Friday for Dundurn Saskatchewan to join a 1 000 cadet summer camp. The group will travel by bus to Brandon then onto a special train with instructors from Prairie Command and other western provinces. They will participate in 14 courses from leadership to driver mechanics and wear horse riding and swimming into the seven week camp.
Dauphin Rotary Club launches a six week water safety course at Ochre Beach starting Monday. Three two week periods offer at least ten lessons each with certificates for passing levels and artificial respiration training. Public film showings accompany instruction and a one dollar twenty five cent fee covers ten lessons.
Heavy rains and two sharp hail storms swept Gilbert Plains Fairville Fishing River and surrounding districts. Crops on higher lands were good but lower areas remained flooded with slow drainage, though some roots may regrow. Hail sizes reached golf ball scale along a southeast path, but farmers remain hopeful most crops will survive despite damage.

The Dauphin Horticultural Society show in Wallace building awarded top peony honors to Mrs. H. Wooster for the best three blooms and Miss Lillian Esplen for the best single peony bloom. Marlene Shumanski won the 16 years and under prize. Judges praised high bloom quality despite bad weather. Second and third prizes went to Mrs. S. E. McLean and Mrs. J. L. McPhee respectively.
Work began Wednesday on replacing the sidewalk along the east side of Main Street from Second Avenue North, about half the block in length. The project was funded in the 1956 public works budget as a needed improvement to the area labeled the worst sidewalk in the district.
Dauphin Boys and Girls band departs Friday at 6 a.m. by bus for Brandon fair. About 40 members plus majorettes will join the Travellers Parade in the morning and perform before the evening show with Bandmaster George Zradicka guiding, assisted by Dr Vern Watson and Const Dave Keele.
A by law passed by the Rural Municipality of Ochre River on June 12 restricts water skiing near Ochre Beach and limits motor boat speeds to three miles per hour within a marked boundary on Lake Dauphin. The rules authorize a boundary marked by anchored buoys and designate two lanes for boats and skiers to reach open water.
The Dauphin-Ochre area board approved Sam Warner of the local contracting firm to build the Mackenzie school auditorium and classrooms at a bid of 190 432, the lowest among four tenders. Architects Moody and Moore will supervise, aiming for a December 15 completion and coordinating equipment tenders with Indian Affairs for department approval.
A. H. Parker, farmer of Gilbert Plains, is nominated as the Liberal candidate for the Dauphin constituency. Delegates at the town hall registration totaled 250, the largest in memory, with Parker chosen over W J Ward as James Stewart of Roblin nominated Parker. Parker has long been active in public and community work.
Senator M W Wall of Winnipeg spoke at the Dauphin Liberal association nominating convention urging Lib supporters to unite behind the candidate and overlook partisan disappointments. He argued for a strong national government backed by a broad Ontario to British Columbia support base and emphasized performance over promises. The event drew about 250 electors in the town hall and highlighted regional cooperation and social justice.
A busload of 37 teachers headed by M J G Mullen and guided by George W Brisbin toured Brandon, visiting Hinderson and Mackenzie schools, the Federal building, then lunch at Boulevard hotel before moving to Swan River. The fourteenth annual departmental tour runs 12 days, includes Wasagaming Riding Mountain resort and ends with Brandon supper after touring eastern Manitoba.
The council reviewed damage to the lower reservoir sluice gate after heavy rains. Officials agreed a temporary gate similar to the existing design will suffice while the extent of surrounding damage is assessed and a concrete replacement is planned for the future.
The rural society exhibition prize list totals over 8000 dollars, with new trophies and classes including a champion saddle pony ribbon and boy or girl rider awards. Improvements at DMCC Grounds include a new washroom, sheep barn upgrades, two livestock wash racks, and expanded heavy horse and pony events.
