Union of Municipalities Holds Annual District Convention

Delegates from Dauphin Judicial district attend the Union of Manitoba Municipalities meeting in Dauphin Tweeday June 17. Morning sessions covered minutes and bylaw changes including changing electors roll deadline to June 15 and August readiness, plus road funding and revenue sharing proposals. Mayor Bullmore reelected district representative. Flin Flon mayor Stevens on resolutions committee. Afternoon address by municipal commissioner Wim Morton warned future revenue gaps. speakers included R Mitchell and R M Fisher. Banquet featured Inspector Booth on school area benefits and composite high schools. Next year’s convention to be held at the same site.

The Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre DMCC campaign opens with two methods to raise funds. Business canvassing targets firms while a payroll deduction plan engages employees. Volunteers canvass residential areas with 30 collectors on the first lap.

Decoration Day Service Planned June 22 by Dauphin Legion

The Dauphin branch of the Canadian Legion BES.L announces a Decoration Day service on Sunday June 22 at 3 pm at the Cenotaph. Ex service personnel should meet at the G WV A hall 30 minutes prior and march to the Cenotaph for a memorial service. Afterward veterans travel to Riverside cemetery for a dedication of the Memorial avenue of trees.

Dennison Motors opens with gasoline sale for DMCC

The new Dennison Motors at Main and Third South opens Saturday June 2. All proceeds from a case of gasoline sold that day will be donated to the Dau Phin Memorial and Community Centre. The one storey modernistic building offers full motor service and the public is invited to inspect.

No Preparations To Open No 7 As Summer Camp

No preparations are being made to open No 7 airport as a summer cadet camp. Crews are removing equipment and shipping it to Gimli and Edmonton while War Assets Corp checks buildings. The move follows a policy shift eliminating the site from permanent RC A F use.

Salt Creek Farmers Seek Flood Relief Ditch Plan

A 35 member Salt Creek farming delegation urged the rural council to build a ditch to carry spring floodwater to Vermillion river. Engineer H W R Gemmel indicated it might not worsen Dauphin flood risk and noted last year’s plan stalled due to winter conditions. The council may fund essential work this year and consider starting the Vermillion river dragline project from the mouth upstream to improve drainage.

Salt creek farmers questioned Mr Gemmel on a proposed highway and large ditches to channel flood waters. The plan would bring more water to the Salt creek district than in past years with an off take ditch discussed but not decided.

Timber worker dies in Madison lake plane crash

Donald Brown aged 20 of The Pas was killed in a small plane crash on take off from Madison lake about 200 miles northeast of Fort William. Born in Dauphin, he attended Ravenscourt Fort Garry and graduated with high honors. He would have entered Queen's University this fall.

Henderson School to Lead North End Elementary Project

The large area school board approved naming the new north end elementary as Henderson School in honor of W. J. Henderson a long time Dauphin educator. Construction starts this summer with F Watchier supervising and site work under way including basement plans and material reuse from a demolished hangar.

New Bicycle Racks Placed On Streets

The Dauphin Lions Club installed four modern bicycle racks on Main Street at Burrows Avenue. Each rack holds five bikes and the stands, painted yellow and black, bear the words Dauphin Lions Club. Bike owners quickly used the new racks.

Pro Golfer Joins Hole-In-One Club At Dauphin

Doug Robertson new pro at Dauphin Country Club scored an ace on the No. 2 hole in a round last week. His iron misfire pushed into a bunker and ricocheted to the cup. He cautions others not to copy his risky method.
