Wartime Issues On Agenda At Manitoba Municipal Meeting

About 80 delegates from Dauphin district towns met at the Town hall for the annual Union of Manitoba Municipalities session. Resolutions urged federal action to cap loan interest, repeal the three cent gasoline tax for agricultural tractors, enforce citizenship duties, and seek provincial aid for two thirds of highway costs.

Good Response To Housing Appeal At Dauphin

Dauphin citizens reacted positively last week to a housing appeal for airmen and wives. J H Delong of the Employment Service of Canada in the Town Hall Rooms Listing office said locals were surprised by the shortage and promised to open more rooms. A line formed at the listing window and demand continued as accommodations are filled as they become available.

Lighting Storm Hits Dauphin Takes Town's Power

A violent electric storm struck Dauphin Tuesday evening after 10 PM causing a major lightning discharge. The town’s lighting system tripped the plant breaker but the plant remained undamaged. Seven north end street lamps burned out and power was restored within a minute after safety gear was reconnected. Winnipegosis Victory Loan returns for the week total $26,600, 75 percent over the district quota.

Manitoba Municipalities Meet Sets 1942 District Meeting

D. E. Mellish spoke on licensing public service vehicles while John Spalding reported on union developments from last fall’s resolutions. Reeve R. Mitchell of Grandview was named district representative to the provincial convention in Winnipeg in November. Winnipegosis will host the district union in 1942 with a visit to No 10 S.F.T.S. near here and a concluding dinner.

Driveway Hardsurfacing Underway at Allard's Garage

Hardsurfacing began on the driveway in front of Allard's garage at the Burrows and First corner. The work extends from the west sidewalk to the air pumps on the east with new concrete aprons on both sides of the gasoline pumps.

Control Board Extends Dauphin Rent Control in Seven Areas

The wartime prices and trade board extends rent control to seven new areas including Dauphin with new maximum rents set to Jan 2 1941 levels or latest 1940 lease. Applications for rent variation accepted through Sept 30 1941. Local county and district courts will handle variation applications with rental committees consisting of district judges.

Golfers Forgo Improvements To Fund Victory Bonds

Dauphin Country Club directors reverse plan to raise Sunday and holiday green fees and to build locker and club room. Fees stay at fifty cents daily, not seventy-five for holidays, while $700 slated for improvements is redirected to buy Victory bonds. Weather data and grain company courtesy follow.

Young Banker Found Dead Near Vermillion River Camp

W Edward M Simister a 20 year old banker from Estevan Sask joined Bank of Montreal as ledger keeper arrived fortnight ago was found dead on the Vermillion river banks near a tourist camp Friday police suspect suicide He carried a 32 calibre pistol in his hand and was last seen Thursday evening at his bank before missing the send off he did not sleep at his bed the body taken to Bullmore’s Funeral home and later moved to Thompson’s Funeral Home Winnipeg for services

Victory Bond Draw At Playground Dance

A $50 Victory bond will be awarded in a draw held June 30 during the Playground dance. Proceeds go to Dauphin Children's playgrounds with sponsorship by the Dauphin Confercial Travellers and the Dauphin B P W club.

Dauphin Recruiting Sets Province Record

Dauphin's mobile unit signed 50 men, a record for Manitoba towns, after visiting last Wednesday. More than double the number applied to the examining board, with the unit staying an extra day. Nine recruits were signed at Winnipegosis, while Capt. Maris H. Garton praised Dauphin's excellent response.

Quiet Council Meeting Ends Without Notable Action

Last Thursday's council session produced no major headlines as the meeting spread through routine matters. Mayor Ramsden chaired with Councillors McLean Puchalski Solomon Astwood Hutchison Justice Lepper and Taylor present. the group moved into committee, and the scribe left early for the night.

Dauphin Surpasses Victory Loan Goal by Large Margin

The Dauphin Victory Loan committee exceeded the 1941 quota of 105000 by a wide margin with subscriptions reaching 171700 and the new objective set at 200000. Canvassers are praised for explaining government loan methods, and a full committee roster is listed.

Salvation Army Tag Day Totals $154.30 For Charity

Proceeds totaling $154.30 were raised last Saturday during the Salvation Army annual tag day. Major John Sullivan reports the amount surpassed last year’s returns. Sellers included C.
