The housing squeeze around Dauphin intensifies as No.7 B base staff arrive. Employers rush to find rooms in modern homes while many applicants leave disappointed. J H Delong, the employment officer, urges listing available rooms at the clearing house.
The Provincial Good Roads department scraped part of No 5 highway between Dauphin and Dauphin Beach to keep it usable until asphalt hauling for No 7B runways is done. Dauphin branch workers say the scraping is merely maintenance and extensive repairs await completion of the air school runways, estimated around June 20.
Preliminary plans for a Dauphin salvage campaign were laid at a Friday meeting of local group representatives. J. W. Monson chaired the session and Mrs. A. T. Warnock served as secretary. Organizers will approach Ottawa and Winnipeg for further information before a public meeting is scheduled.
Winnipegosis and Massey River districts exceed their $20 500 target three days after campaign start on June 2 and earn a second Victory Loan pennant. A Monday parade to the cenotaph featured Legion Elks Girl Guides and local church and school groups with services led by several clergymen. Mayor Wm Walmsley spoke for the municipality and H L Williams outlined the publicity committee progress. canvassing for outlying areas continues to close the drive.
A local store manager invited troops past his shop as drum rolls announced their parade approach last Saturday. The scene drew staff and shoppers outside to view the visiting unit then resumed inside after the display.
The Union of Manitoba Municipalities met yesterday in the Town Hall for their annual convention. A full account of the meeting will be carried in next week's Herald.
Captain J L Wilson of the 18th Manitoba Reconnaissance battalion said the mobile recruiting unit drew about 50 promising applicants by noon Wednesday. The popular regiments were the 18th Manitoba Reconnaissance battalion and the 70th field battery of the 16th field regiment. The medical board chair was Captain H J Atkinson of Winnipeg with Lieut F J McLean and Dr A Searle. The staff included four others, and recruitment was to continue at the Legion hall under local militia direction for several days.
Alex Spence 19 of Dauphin was struck by a freight train at the Paulson C N R siding about 6 45 Monday morning while visiting relatives. He left Dauphin Sunday. Survived by his mother and foster father Mr and Mrs Victor Garneau of Dauphin. Body to Bullmore's Funeral Home. Funeral 10 a m Thursday from St Victor's Catholic Church to Riverside Cemetery.
Edward Payne of Dauphin driver of a 1941 Oldsmobile suffered a fractured skull and a broken leg when his car skidded on loose gravel on No 5 highway three miles west of Dauphin at 11 am Wednesday and was struck by a freight truck operated by Carleton La Fleur of Dauphin. A second passenger Herbert Bowes of Dauphin was slightly injured. Payne was taken to Dauphin General hospital where his condition at noon Wednesday was not critical.
The Dauphin Theatre announces that Election Night will be discontinued during the summer season. This change confirms the venue will not host the production between June and August.
More than thirty Dauphin veterans plus 100 officers and men from the 103rd Veteran Guard of Canada leave Dauphin at 8 10 Saturday for two weeks at Shilo. Units from Roblin The Pas Swan River and Neepawa join the march with Major B Saunderson and Lieuts Middleditch Shewfelt among officers.
Led by Jim Gardner the Dauphin Collegiate Institute track team dominated the Portage la Prairie provincial meet for secondary schools securing 25 of 264 points. Gardner won two firsts and set two provincial records as the team placed strongly last Saturday.
About 250 cadets from C Squadron Fort Garry Horse staged a lengthy first inspection last Thursday led by Lieut. G F Hart and Sgt. Major W J Cummings. The annual event featured company and platoon drill, PT, musketry, and first aid with Cadet Captain James Wynes in command and Jack McGuirk leading B company.
Leading Aircraftman Robert Gordon Alexander 25 of Saskatoon died after his Harvard crashed northwest of No 1 Relief aero drome while on the No 10 SFTS night flying circuit. An RAF court of enquiry headed by Squadron Leader Loxton investigated. Post mortem by Dr. Malcolm. Alexander lived in Saskatoon and worked in interior decorating before joining the RCAF last year. He was active in YMCAs and sports.
James Andrew Kidd a young taxi driver was remanded for trial at the fall assizes and released on bail of 2000 dollars after a Friday hearing before Magistrate Trios. He is charged with manslaughter of 15 year old Helen Sytnick who died from shock and haemorrhages after being struck May 10 by Kidd’s car near the Dauphin outskirts. The magistrate found sufficient evidence for a jury trial. Sgt Pilot Lorne Forbes was the chief witness.
Dauphin campaign reports over 90000 subscribed with canvassing continuing across districts. Officials note local prosperity from steady agriculture and airmen spending money, aiming for 105000 though supporters expect up to 150000 in subscriptions. Duff work camp workers pledged full support as a man misinterpreted the mission before agreeing to subscribe.
Threatening weather prompted the Dauphin Rural Field Day Association to postpone Friday’s event. The day will open at 10 a.m. with a parade of schools.
