Largest Improvement Jobs Completed For Current Year
The Dauphin Public Works summer program finished its major tasks including sidewalks street lamps road oiling and reservoir weeding. Tomlinson Construction completed asphalt paving from Front Street to Third Avenue and Main Street oiling from Sixth Avenue to Twelfth Avenue south. The oiling is only half done and a final coat may follow. Weeding of the water reservoir began earlier to address debris near Edward’s Creek entry.

History Speaking Contest Won By Harry Nataros
Harry Nataros won the Macneill medal for best history speech by a Grade 7 student Friday afternoon. Fourteen contestants presented speeches judged as exceptionally high quality. Second place was shared by Gladys Graves on Marie Lagimodiere and Victoria Senchuk on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Margarett Cruise and Don Fisher received honorable mention for Alexander MacKenz ie and Captain Cook.

Dauphin to Organize Local Air Cadet League Branch
A committee in Dauphin forms to sponsor a branch of the Air Cadet League of Canada. Cadets aged 15 to 18 will train in 216 hours over two years with school credits. uniforms mirror RC A F style. Local officers from the community will lead. Education and RCAF support backs the effort.

Robert Fagen Elected President of Manitoba Officials Body
Robert Fagen, secretary treasurer of the Town of Dauphin, was elected president of the Manitoba Municipal Secretary-Treasurers' association at the opening session of the tenth annual convention in Winnipeg. He could not attend the installation as he is hospitalized after an attack of pneumonia at Misericordia hospital.

Cliff Weir Receives RCAF Wings as Dauphin Pilot
Cliff Weir of Dauphin becomes the first local to earn wings from a Commonwealth air training school. The sergeant pilot graduated from No 7 Service Flying Training School at Macleod Alberta Friday afternoon. Wing Commander Arthur L. James presided as Mrs Weir attended. Sgt Picot Weir is posted to Trenton for an instructors course.
Wheat Progress in Dauphin District Amid Heavy Rains
The Herald reports Dauphin district wheat is well advanced with shot blade and some already heading. Moisture from heavy spring rains reached over 125 percent of normal, boosting grain height to about 20 inches. An elevator agent, after surveying Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta, calls the valley's growth exceptional and particularly pleasing.

Rural Dauphin district roads reclassified as B highways

Speed Limit Set Near Air Schools Near Dauphin
A 30 mph speed limit now applies on sections of No 5 and No 10 highways to Dauphin air stations and near the No 7 Bombing and Gunnery school. The rule, following a court inquiry into Helen Sytnick’s death, is enforced by R C M police patrols with prosecutions for speeding.

Dauphin Businesses Close For Dominion Day
Dauphin business houses will close all day Tuesday July 1 for Dominion Day and reopen Thursday. The post office will be open to box holders all day Tuesday and to the general delivery wicket 9 to 10. The Women’s War Work committee of the Red Cross has cancelled its regular Tuesday meeting for this day.
No 7 B and G School Opens Training for Wireless Air Gunners
Training operations in aerial gunnery began Monday for the first class of wireless air gunners at No 7 B and G School. The fifteenth school in the command is the largest of its type in the Commonwealth Air Training plan. Dauphin is described as the largest air training center in the command. Gunners arrived June 22 from Calgary No 2 Wireless School. The four week course trains men for overseas service with a short leave. Observers will be trained in bombing and air firing over Lake Dauphin. Temporary commanding officer is Wing Commander R Cameron. permanent CO W A Riddell is unable to assume duties due to illness. Chief gunnery officer is Flight Lieutenant G O Godson. Flying corps commanding officer is Flight Lieutenant H E Stewart. Second class gunners arrive in about a month.
