Police Start Clean Up Campaign On Traffic Violators In Town

On May 1 the RCMP Dauphin detachment began a drive to enforce the highway traffic act. Nine accused pleaded guilty in police court on Thursday morning. Magistrate Thormastle urged action to clean up the traffic situation. Multiple fines were issued for parking on Main Street and running stop signs. One driver faced a driving to the common danger charge with a ten day jail option. Police said checkups would continue until the situation improved.

In the first five months of 1947 Dauphin issued permits totaling $109,560, far below 1946’s $195,524. May saw 23 permits worth $64,160 including 12 residences and 4 commercial repairs. last year May was the peak at $86,750.

Dauphin Elk Sports Day and DMCC Fund Drive Planned

The Dauphin Elk lodge schedules a June 19 sports day at the Dauphin Fairgrounds featuring a $625 prize baseball tournament and $200 in horse racing across three half mile heats plus pony races. A giant bicycle parade, tag sales for DMCC, a Sunday rally at the Dauphin Theatre by C F Greene, and an evening vaudeville show cap the fund drive launch. Adults and bicycle racers will crowd the events. entry rules prohibit touching ground during the bike race.

The weatherman eased into the 60s and 70s across the district last week while overcast skies persisted and .si inches of rain were measured at the meteorological office. Road conditions are described as good though the highway through Riding Mountain National Park needs improvement.

Dauphin Collegiate track squad places third at the western provincial meet in Brandon on May 31 with 43 points. New records in nap, step and jump by Fred Lesyshen and Alex Marchuk. Dauphin also wins first places by Cliff McIntosh and the senior relay. eight seconds and three thirds add to 383 team points. Girls tally four seconds and two thirds for ten points.

Banks provincial and dominion offices will close on Monday June 9 for the King's birthday. Stores will not be closed, according to the Herald.

Death of Jack Ball Stuns Community

Jack Ball 41 a Dauphin druggist died by poison in his store on a Friday evening in a act of despair health and business worries led to his suicide. He was born in 1906 educated in Dauphin later became manager owner and active in school church Lions club and sports. Survived by wife Hazel and two daughters Linda Louise and Margaret Elizabeth, six siblings, and a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Bullmore's funeral parlors with burial in Riverside cemetery.

Businessmen pressed Portage la Prairie officials about poor ring timing and missed calls at a board of trade meeting. C Settle, superintendent of maintenance for the Portage Dauphin Manitoba line, said improvements are planned though replacements take time. He urged a 15 second pause between calls to improve second-number connections. Dauphin will benefit from upgrades as soon as possible, despite long-distance bottlenecks.

Official Welcome For First Plane At Dauphin Airport

Officials and a large crowd welcomed the first Canadian Pacific Airlines plane at the newly inaugurated Winnipeg to Flin Flon route via The Pas and Dauphin. Mayor Bullmore spoke as the CPA crew and 12 passengers were greeted. Alf Buckwold bought the first ticket, inviting Sau Bay on the inaugural trip.
