Town council considers a lard surfaced pavement program for all streets. The cost would be borne as frontage assessments over 12 to 15 years, about $25 per year for a 50 foot lot. Engineer BR S Everall outlines grading drainage and a 24 foot asphalt roadway with curbs, maintenance needs, and contractor led paving.
The Dauphin Herald announces its largest issue ever at 24 pages up from 20 with about 3,500 issues printed. The Goss Comet press uses 154000 feet of paper this week and the full run would stretch over 29 miles if laid end to end.
A town council meeting passed amendments to the building by law restricting gasoline and benzine in glass containers. The rules ban storing more than one quart in glass and forbid selling gasoline or benzine to anyone using glass containers. Immediate effect requires vendors to refuse such sales.
Dauphin chamber of commerce will receive two trophies from the Canadian chambers of commerce at its annual banquet on January 12 in the town hall. Stan ley N. Jones of Winnipeg accepted the fire prevention shield and health and safety trophy on behalf of the local chamber. Victor W Murray of the Winnipeg Tribune is invited as guest speaker for the event.
Dauphin town set a new yearly record in 1949 with 123 total sewer and water connections by the town engineer department after 109 house and 14 business connections plus 13 storm sewers. At year start 240 premises were on mains but unconnected. proposed seven year installments for owner pay. The matter was referred to the sewer and water committee for review.
Dauphin plans general provincial legislation to allow municipalities to contract bus services. Town solicitor E N McGirr outlined lack of Municipal Act authority while Evergreen Transit operates on a winter trial. The council invited a waiting room request from the bus firm and to review company insurance for passenger safety.
George Scott of the Manitoba power commission told the Dauphin town council that new feeders now serve the north and south ends, with a standby line to the hospital to prevent long outages. In an emergency, domestic customers would be cut off temporarily. Street lights, including a new corner light at Tenth Avenue and First Street SE, are being installed, with 13 lights on order around town.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce voted unanimously to petition the Post Office Department to inaugurate letter carrier service in Dauphin. Postmaster J. A. Cressey outlined space and staffing needs and proposed a possible once daily, with potential twice daily, delivery to relieve post office wickets and create jobs. The chamber will inform the local MP and town council of the move.
Officials urged all residents of Dauphin to attend a five day free chest x-ray survey conducted Tuesday through Saturday. The event uses four buildings with sessions to fit family schedules and aims to match or surpass the 1947 turnout of about 90 percent.
