Dauphin Kings Open 1949 50 Hockey Season

The Dauphin Kings open the Big Six Intermediate hockey season tonight in Rivers with two home series and a 9 15 p m game here Saturday against Brandon College. Coach Alex Robertson and manager Mackey Meiride narrow the 21 candidates to 15 per game while Norm Nantais guards the net and a battle for forward and defense spots continues. The squad also travels to Brandon and Neepawa next week with a home date set for December 21 against Souris as players await signings and possible lineup changes.

Free chest X-ray drive ends this Saturday in Dauphin

Three days remain in the tuberculosis survey of Dauphin. The unit opened Tuesday and will travel to Smith Jackson school on Thursday MacKenzie school Friday and the town hall Saturday. Students can be x-rayed Thursday and Friday mornings while the public may attend in the afternoons and evenings and all day Saturday.

Skating Season Opens Tonight At Dauphin Arena

Public skating begins tonight at the Dauphin skating and hockey rink. The Dauphin parks board announced the opening at Monday’s meeting. Admissions will be charged and season tickets will go on sale. Skating regulations for the 1949-50 season have been posted around town.

Dauphin Lady Curlers Form 1950 Bonspiel Committees

Dauphin ladies bonspiel executive includes presidents Mrs. W Cruise and Helen Bowman with Mrs. A L Wrye as secretary treasurer. Banquet and prizes chaired by R J Deighton and J A Ringstrom. Event runs January 31 to February 3, aiming to surpass last year’s 46 rink entry record.

Reserve Seats Set for Dauphin Big Six Hockey Schedule

Dauphin Parks Board approves 92 reserved seats above the waiting room for all five Big Six league games. Tickets cost 3.75 dollars, cover league games and may be used for exhibitions and playoffs. Passes also issued for visiting teams and officials.

Patrols Compete For Hockey Passes In Dauphin

Dauphin's three school safety patrols will compete for passes to local hockey games during winter. The best patrol each week wins free passes for all patrol members. Judging is weekly by Constable N Stowell with RCMP support to stress supervision. The theater party for the patrols was held last Saturday at the Dauphin theatre.

A Pine River school gathering on December 2 organized an M.T.S. local with teachers from Ethelbert Garland Pine River and nearby districts. Dauphin Local School Board Marks Final 1949 Meeting

The Dauphin local school board held its last meeting of the year with members noting a reduced board size for next year. Current members George Sumpter Dr W L Watson and Ben Phillips will remain, while two new appointees will be chosen by them at the first 1950 session. Enrollment fell to 998 pupils across three elementary schools in November from 1001 in October. Visitors Day drew 325 at Henderson 180 at Whitmore and 170 at Smith Jackson, reflecting strong parent turnout.

Dowler Re elected Leader of Dauphin Agricultural Society

George Dowler is reelected president of the Dauphin Agricultural Society at a meeting of newly elected directors in the municipal office. J. A. McKillop is reelected vice president. Committee chairs for 1950 are named across livestock poultry sheep and swine cattle horses and other areas with three new committees to be created later for reception midway and special prizes.

Temperatures returned to normal with a high of 40.1 degrees last Friday and a low of 29 degrees Tuesday. Wednesday saw a six degree drop and precipitation was light with snow traces Friday Saturday Monday and 0.2 inch on Tuesday. Compared with last year the week had a higher peak of 32.2 on December 2 and a low of 8 on November 30.

Town Issues Permits For 71 New Dwellings In 1949

The town issued two new dwelling permits in November bringing 11 month total to 71, more than double 1948. Repairs and a private garage permit added, lifting total permits to 136 with November value at $11,500 and year to date value at $541,262.

Dauphin game and fish group passes four resolutions

The Dauphin game and fish association met Tuesday at the Legion hall and approved four resolutions to present to the Manitoba federation of game and fish associations in Winnipeg. They urged resident anglers licenses, called for a lake survey of Lake Dauphin, sought deer seasons to include does, and advocated uniforms for game officers. The group also discussed duck season dates and planned February elections.

Rural Manitoba begins first Saturday education degree courses

In Dauphin Manitoba the University of Manitoba conducts the first rural Saturday courses toward Bachelor of Education, Master of Education, or Bachelor of Pedagogy. Twenty eight teachers from Dauphin Ochre School Area 1 enroll, with skew toward town and rural schools. Examinations start December 17 as the program expands to Brandon next year.

Nite Of Fun to Open Dauphin Skating Arena

Dauphin commercial travellers stage a Dec 17 opening night at the new skating arena with a Nite of Fun program. The entertainment features figure skating acts and troupe members performing skating numbers seen in other shows, promised to be light and humorous for all.

Library Board Rejects Advertising Book Covers in Library

The Dauphin public library board met November 29 and rejected selling advertising on book covers by Northwest Publishing of Vancouver. The board passed two resolutions stating the covers are not sanctioned and that the solicitor be asked to inform Northwest Publishing of the unauthorized use of the library name. A summary was sent to the chamber of commerce merchants committee.
