Fire destroys Weliever home and contents
Fire discovered shortly before seven last Thursday evening destroyed the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Weliever. The blaze, likely from electric wiring, gutted the house while the family was away. Much clothing and furniture were lost, but fruit and provisions in the cellar were saved. Volunteers helped defend neighboring property as a water main burst, and rain helped prevent further damage. The couple moved to the Homer Miller residence near the school.

Farmer Ends Life By Stabbing Heart At Home
Leander Hanes, 61, a well known farmer north of Kirkpatrick, died Friday morning after stabbing himself in the chest with a pocketknife. His body was found about 7:30 by Mrs. Nettie Sitzwater at the Sitzwater home where Hanes lived. No reason for the act was given, neighbors say he was in good health and spirits that morning. Montgomery County Oratorical Winners Shine at Gala Contest
More than five hundred attended the Montgomery County Oratorical Contest with eleven high schools participating. Everett Hawkins of New Ross won boys first prize on The Genius of Patriotism, while New Market’s Kenneth Buser took second for A Plea for Cuba and Darlington’s Doe Say claimed third for The Path to Peace. In girls’ division Jeanette Paddock of Darlington won with Armenia's Last Appeal, Harriet Morrow of New Richmond was second for a Revolutionary War Address, and Eva Boots earned third for The Defense of Hofer. Judges were Professors Smith and Witt and Miss Smith. The Win gas High School Orchestra provided music. Cash prizes totaling 30 were donated by local businessmen, with first-prize schools receiving silver cups. Darlington’s second cup marks a two-year sweep for the town. The praise is directed at Miss Margaret Weesner, English teacher who oversees the program.
