East Carolina Wins Labor Backing for Medical School Bid
East Carolina University won the support of the state AFL-CIO at its drive to add a four-year medical school in Greenville. Delegates approved a resolution urging the General Assembly to establish ECU’s degree-granting medical school, marking labor’s backing for the project amid ongoing studies by the state Board of Governors. Chancellor Leo Jenkins highlighted plans for further labor movement studies in the curriculum and noted ECU’s aim to become the second state degree-granting medical school. Labor leader Wilbur Hobby emphasized health care needs and opportunities for eastern workers and farm kids if ECU succeeds. Policies and studies will be reviewed as next steps progress.
