Virginia panel hears mixed views on death penalty
A Virginia Crime Commission hearing drew two supporters and eight opponents of reinstating capital punishment. Religious leaders argued deterrence is not achieved and life imprisonment without parole is preferable. Others urged mandatory death for certain crimes, while advocates warned of rising murder fears. A second hearing is planned for November 9 with a full report due December 1.
