Egypt asks US and USSR for peacekeeping troops
Cairo reports U N observers struggle to mark cease-fire lines near the Suez Canal amid renewed fighting. Israel claims repelled Egyptian actions while warning of a broader move west of the canal. U S and Soviet moves to discuss arms reductions are noted as the U N seeks observers. Watergate issues dominate Washington talk amid calls for a special prosecutor and Meany impeachment pressure.

Nine Killed On Foggy Turnpike In New Jersey Crash
A series of crashes on the New Jersey Turnpike during foggy early hours left at least nine dead. Vehicles were abandoned and motorists tried to hitchhike home as sections north of Woodbridge were closed and speed limits reduced. A turnpike spokesman called it the worst accident in turnpike history. Wind driven fog and smoke from a Hackensack Meadowlands swamp fire reduced visibility and hampered rescues amid major traffic jams on routes to New York.
