Roanoke Lawyers Discuss Women's Rights In Virginia

About seven people attended a YWCA seminar in Roanoke where three female lawyers from the Southwestern Virginia Women's Bar Association outlined Virginia rights on divorce property ownership credit alimony and child support. They addressed divorce grounds custody and enforcement, ERA prospects, property rights for women since 1877, and Equal Credit Opportunity Act implications for female borrowers.

Disciplined Judge Loses Court Appeal In Richmond

Former Richmond General District Court Judge Harold C. Maurice lost a federal appeal seeking to retain retirement benefits after Virginia Supreme Court discipline. A U.S. District Judge dismissed the suit for lack of jurisdiction while Maurice fights in state courts.

Danville Brantly Plant Faces Shutdown Bid by 1973 Deadline

The Brantly Steam Generating Plant, supplying about 15 percent of Danville's electricity, may be shut by July 1, 1973 if EPA pressures prevail. Mayor Clarke says upgrading or closing is required due to four years of emissions concerns. EPA has referred the case to the U.S. Attorney over particulates, and local plans rely on 69kV links to APCO until 128kV upgrades planned for 1981.

Obituaries for Harvey Ammons and Silas Brumfield in Danville

Funeral services are set for Harvey V Ammons 42 of South Boston at 2 30 PM Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Halifax Memorial Gardens. He is survived by wife Anita, four daughters, three sisters, three brothers and two grandsons. Also noted is Silas D Brumfield 72 of 208 Bailey Place who died Monday at The Memorial Hospital of Danville after three years of declining health. He was a Sears Roebuck salesman and Keen Street Baptist Church member, survived by wife Mabel Heath Brumfield, one daughter Pegey B Singleton, three brothers, four sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete with viewing at Townes Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 30 to p.m.

Elvis in Roanoke: Early Years to 1977 Concerts

Roanoke Times writer Guy Sterling chronicles Elvis Presley’s Roanoke visits starting in 1955. The 48 page book includes firsthand recollections from 1955, a rare 1955 photo, 1956 and 1960 stopovers after Army discharge, and Roanoke Civic Center performances in 1972 1974 and 1976 with a planned 1977 tour that followed his death.

Osborn Scholarship Winner at Virginia Tech

Mary A. Norman of Danville and Roanoke, a senior dietetics major at Virginia Tech, received a 500 Edward Osborn Trust Scholarship from the American Dietetic Association Foundation. She participates in Tech’s coordinated undergraduate program with LewisGale and VA hospitals in Salem, spending two quarters gaining clinical experience before returning to Blacksburg.

Oak Ridge Preaching Rally Set With Homecoming

Oak Ridge Christian Church will host a three day preaching rally November 16 to 18 with services at 7 30 p m. Rev Harry Yoder formerly of Oak Ridge and now at Cedar Grove Christian Church Inwood West Virginia will be evangelist. Homecoming Sunday November 20 features Rev Tom Woronowice of Martinsville as morning speaker with lunch at 12 30 p m and a 2 p m closing service to end the series.
