The Virginia Council of Churches endorsed the $21 million prison construction bond ahead of next Tuesday’s vote. Norton Hodges brother of Mrs. Margaret Dudley of 149 Canterbury Road Akron Ohio died early Thursday in Akron Ohio He was a former resident of Franklin County The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p m at Lynch Funeral Chapel Rocky Mount Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Park near Boones Mill where the family will receive friends Saturday night

Mrs Camille Penrose Beirne 92 widow of Maj Richard F Beirne Jr founder and publisher of the Covington Virginian Inc died Thursday in Covington She came to Covington in 1913 with her husband who bought the Covington Dispatch later turning it into the daily Covington Virginian in 1934 Her son Richard F Beirne II is the paper's publisher and her grandson Horton P Beirne is editor and general manager Funeral arrangements are complete.
James A. L. Daniel and Selig H. Kingoff were appointed acting city attorneys during W. Ewell Barr’s recovery from gall bladder surgery. They will work part time while maintaining private practices. $1,000 was transferred from contingency to fund outside services for the two. A liquor by the drink agenda motion failed for lack of a second in a special meeting.
Gallman guest speaker James A. Gallman of Stauffer Chemical led a slide show. Woodrow and Mary Yates were honored with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. award for 1976 at the Pittsylvania County SWCD Awards Night. Gretna FFA member Ralph McBride and Gretna Junior High teacher Jimmy Robertson received the Youth Award. Gretna chapter named outstanding.
