Readiness Report Faults Army Divisions For Viet Nam Strain

A Senate Preparedness Subcommittee report found four of the Army's six U S emergency combat divisions are below combat readiness due to manpower and equipment drawn for Viet Nam. The 4th Infantry 5th Mechanized 1st and 2nd Armored are not in full readiness, with unclear light on equipment status. The spokesman could not confirm if any of the 21 battalions cited by McNamara have left for Viet Nam, noting stateside divisions would need training missions as Guard and Reserve were not called to active duty. McNamara had indicated four regular divisions and five National Guard and Marine Reserve units would be involved, with the Marine Corps forming a new regular division.
