Valachi Transferred to Michigan Federal Prison

Joseph Valachi, 61, who broke the blood oath of the Cosa Nostra, was moved to a federal prison in Milan Michigan from the District of Columbia jail. He arrived at Willow Run Airport, with guards securing him in a maximum security unit. Officials hope Milan will be his final home and shield him from mob revenge.

Valachi moved to Milan prison for isolation in lesser cell

Charles V. Valachi, the Mafia informant, has been transferred to a slightly larger cell in Milan near Detroit in a renovated area. Government sources say the move, in daylight, aims to shield him from other inmates who might harm him for breaking omerta. He is to live in relative isolation with limited guard presence, allowed a TV, hot plate, and roof exercise, while writing his memoirs. Officials view the relocation as part of a broader effort amid national crime studies to curb organized crime knowledge and publicity.
