Tobacco leaders optimistic on policy and exports
Lacy Weeks of Tobacco Associates urged action on eliminating surplus while predicting 1966 auctions will not be affected by sealed bid sales. He warned that keeping surplus tobacco would cost investors, noting the 1957 crop’s nine years in storage and potential final sales above 20 dollars. Weeks highlighted a Common Market proposal to impose high supports with no controls, risking U.S. exports, and announced plans to exhibit at the Leipzig Trade Fair to boost ties with Iron Curtain markets. Davis was elected Virginia representative on Stabilization’s board, with a call for continued improvements in Virginia tobacco quality.
