In near North Viet Nam, U S Marines and South Vietnamese troops fought Communist forces in separate operations. American jets supported the attack along the Ho Chi Minh trail, hitting both the northern and southern ends as the battle intensified.
Doctors at Roswell Park Memorial Institute located a cancer victim who agreed to participate in a rare cancer transplant with a Tucson businessman. The 65-year-old Philadelphia man and Robert F. Allen, 28, of Tucson, may come to Buffalo for the operation this week. The donor has osteogenic sarcoma and blood type O positive, matching could save both lives. The procedure, transplanting tumor portions into each other, is experimental with no guarantee of success.
In Richmond the Virginia House approved restoring the 3 per cent escalator clause to the 2 per cent general state retail sales tax bill and a $2.2 billion general appropriations bill emerged from committee. The action sets up debate on a budget measure and a $46.8 automotive titling tax for the highway fund, with House actions expected this week ahead of Senate consideration. Governor Godwin praised the decision to reinstate the escalator, saying it aids orderly budgeting for the 1968 biennium.
London AP Britain to choose a new government on March 31 as Prime Minister Harold Wilson names the date in a gamble to keep Labour in power until 1972. In St Louis the two-seat T38 trainer carrying Gemini 9 prime crew Elliot M. Lee Jr and Charles A Bassett II crashed into a building housing the Gemini capsule and Phantom fighters. Backup crew Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan named to replace them. 12 injured workers, regardless of severity. The Gemini 9 capsule remained inside the wreckage, and cause of the crash would take weeks to determine.
Elliot M. Lee Jr and Air Force Maj Charles A Bassett II died in a St Louis jet crash weeks before Gemini 9. In interviews with AP in Houston they expressed a passion for flight and space, aiming to reach the moon and contribute to the program, not just land on the surface.

The storm moved inland by evening per the Raleigh-Durham Airport Weather Bureau.
Washington AP top Marine in South Vietnam said Johnson needed more Marines to secure a 165 mile area and drive out Communist forces. Lt Gen Lewis Walt declined to specify numbers beyond nearly 40,000 Marines already there, noting the difficulty of maintaining gains and rebuilding governments in long-held areas. He said the area has seen Communist control for 12 to 13 years and that while progress is made, stronger forces are required to sustain operations and win confidence. He warned main force units can still mount strong resistance, with at least a North Vietnamese regiment present in his sector.
Alpha Company of the 2nd Battalion 8th Cavalry Regiment seized hospital hill near Bong Son in a frontal assault. Fierce fighting left wrecked huts, Viet Cong bunkers, and 17 enemy bodies. one cavalryman wounded as helicopters and artillery backed the operation.
