Bethesda Presbyterian Rich In Historic Growth
Bethesda Presbyterian grew through late 19th and early 20th century donations from Mrs. R. L. Dibreli Miss Hester Womack and others. Benefactors funded church needs, pews, pulpit furniture, and cemetery upkeep while postwar hardship reduced membership to 21 in 1888. The church began recovering after 1894 with Siddle inheritance and a renewed Sunday school.

Martinsville Withdraws From Head Start Plan
Martinsville School Board withdrew sponsorship of Operation Head Start citing a major policy change by the federal government. Ninety two low income children had been enrolled to begin in July, with a local director appointed and two supervisors. Administrators feared a government suit over alleged school segregation although the superintendent said participation was voluntary and families chose between a white and a Negro school.
