Civic Center Upgrade Urged By Commission For Danville
The Civic Center Study Commission urged the Danville City Council to place the remodeling of the old City Armory Auditorium into a modern civic center on a November bond referendum. Plans shown by architect Kenneth Calvert include auditorium, meeting rooms, dance space, Virginia National Guard offices, and facilities for educational and convention activities at under 850000 dollars. The commission says the 72000 square foot Armory is structurally sound but fails fire codes and needs substantial modernization to meet cultural and civic needs. Parking improvements include relocating the City Curb Market to free space near the Armory.
