Hollings, Morrah Win South Carolina Senate Nominations
In South Carolina Democratic primaries, former Gov. Ernest Hollings and conservative State Sen. Bradley Morrah won decisive nominations for the U.S. Senate seats. Hollings defeated incumbent Sen. Donald S. Russell, while Morrah beat Liberal lawyer John Bolt Culbertson. Unofficial returns from 682 of 1,615 precincts show Hollings 65,538 to 39,026 for Russell. Morrah 49,029 to 31,230 for Culbertson. Voter support came from Black and labor voters in places like Columbia’s Ward Nine and Olympia ward. Russell’s perceived self appointment to the Johnston seat hurt his bid. Hollings carried only Calhoun County among SC counties.
