Action Seen On Rights Bill After Meredith Shooting
Washington officials say Meredith's Mississippi shooting may spur swift action on the administration's civil rights bill this year. Attorney General Katzenbach calls enactment essential to curb violence, while House moves seek separate expedited action to make it a federal crime to interfere with constitutional rights. Demonstrators clash with guards as Katzenbach testifies, with leaders Humphrey and McCormack predicting momentum for civil rights legislation. Senator Ervin questions constitutionality, suggesting alternatives under the 4th and 14th Amendments. Congress debates a separate path to speed passage of protections for Negro rights.
