Five soft coal miners were asphyxiated when a drilling machine cut into an old abandoned working at Dora No 2 mine near Dora Pennsylvania. Two escaped as three brothers went back to help and died. Names: Kramer Gaul and White from Punxsutawney Neiswonger from Mayport Moore from Dubois. Survivors Ishman and Anthony escaped unhurt. An investigation will start Friday.
Former Pennsylvania governor Scranton announces he will not seek the Senate in 1968 or the presidency, intensifying speculation about his future. He cites personal reasons and ends rumors of a 1966 congressional run, while allies urge continued GOP leadership and support.

About 1.1 million returns were audited before refunds, with ~500,000 office audits and ~600,000 field visits planned. By May 28 refunds were 14 percent above last year and $5.2 billion paid. by September about 42 million refunds totaling around $8 billion expected.
