Medics Train With Dogs To Learn Wounded Care

At Fort Bragg an Army Special Forces medic undergoes a 40 week to a year long program that uses dogs as mock patients. Dogs are anesthetized shot in the leg and operated on to treat wounds, then nursed back to health before the leg is amputated and the dog is put to death. The aim is to save human lives in Viet Nam through medical care taught by the same instructors who supervise the surgery and recovery, including training allied aidmen and civic programs. The dogs come from local kennels and are saved from extermination before their role as training patients.
