Demonstrators Released On Bond In Cambridge
In Cambridge Maryland three of seven demonstrators arrested for attempting to integrate the Rescue Fire Company swimming pool were released on $200 bonds. Four others remained jailed on trespassing and disorderly conduct charges. Police reported the released trio William Pitman Cornelius Robinson and Frederick Johnson are from Cambridge. Hearings are set for Thursday. The protest arose after the pool operated by a private all white volunteer firemen organization denied membership. The Justice Department has concluded the pool is exempt from the Civil Rights Act. The case marks Cambridge's first major racial incident of the year after past National Guard occupation periods.
