Break In 18 Day Maritime Strike Frees 22 Tankers
A break in the 18 day old U S maritime strike freed 22 tankers to sail Saturday while 100 more vessels idle. Talks were not planned for the holiday weekend as mediators returned to Washington. The strike by three unions disrupted cargoes, shifting two military shipments to foreign flag vessels and canceling several scheduled sailings. The American Radio Association reached a contract with Tanker Service Committee, freeing Gulf Oil’s 22 tankers. MEBA and others settled separately. Radio officers gain new four year wage and fringe benefit increases averaging about 6.5 to 7.1 percent yearly.
