Agriculture Gains In Proficient Farms, Says USDA
The Agriculture Department reports American farming is expanding its system of proficient farms. From 1939 to 1964 the farm count fell mainly among small, inefficient units. by 1970 about 2.6 million farms are expected, with 1.5 million proficient and about a million small, retirement- or residential-use farms. The shift emphasizes more farms earning over $10,000 in sales and growth in higher income ranges, while overall farm resources stay roughly constant in value despite changing composition.
