Nixon Sees Tide Turning for GOP in Virginia
Roanoke AP Nixon warned Virginia Republicans Saturday’s state convention could energize GOP gains toward 1968. He urged nominating strong men for two open U.S. Senate seats amid Democratic rifts and Republican unity gains while predicting several House seats and potential governorship wins for the party. He called for an economic focus and endorsed tougher Vietnam measures, avoiding a direct presidential bid hint. Mayors and local figures eyed as candidates with no clear second nominee named. The convention opens with William Co. Wampler as keynote and Linwood Holton slated as permanent chairman.
