Des Moines AP report on Johnson addressing Midwesterners urges North Viet Nam to abandon South Viet Nam and declares the United States will fight as long as aggression persists. He presses for a conference table settlement and vows American resolve to honor commitments.
U S jets raided fuel depots above Hanoi to cut North Vietnam’s fuel supplies for trucks and other carriers. Navy fliers hit radar vans and buildings near Kep, while ground battles raged 50 miles north of Saigon. Hanoi radio claimed two enemy planes shot down. American raids targeted Nguyen Khe and Viet Tri storage sites with large explosions and smoke.
President Johnson in Des Moines and Omaha rallies urges firm U S stance against Communist aggression in South Vietnam. He says talks possible if Communists show willingness, warns they will pay a high price for aggression. He stresses no auto ment commitments, only room and people to talk. Second major Vietnam address of day.
The United States told the U N Security Council of bombings on oil facilities near Hanoi and Haiphong and said the aim is to slow communist infiltration. Ambassador Goldberg presented a letter to the council president, reiterating the Geneva conference revival proposal to reaffirm 1954 and 1962 agreements.
John R. Lewis 26 resigns as SNCC officer and former chairman effective July 22 after six years with the movement. He objects to the new slogan Black Power though he does not state it as his reason for leaving. The resignation follows internal disputes over ideology and nonviolence amid the Mississippi march and SNCC leadership changes.
Washington reports quote a State Department official and SNCC veteran Lewis, amid debate over US bombings in North Vietnam. Ball says bombing aimed to raise war costs to force negotiations, not escalation or a Moscow-Peking challenge, while Gore urges renewed peace efforts abroad protests spread from Poland to Romania and Soviet Tass comments condemn the action.
Beirut AP dispatch says Iraqi government under President Abdel Rahman Aref crushed an officer led coup plot. Seven air force planes strafed Baghdad’s presidential palace, killing two and wounding six as the attempt collapsed.
The report says ringleaders of a recent coup attempt against the government have been arrested. The government closed ports and borders and ordered curfews as air force chief Aref Abdul-Rahim and security leaders ordered troops to detain suspects. Baghdad Radio broadcast support from military commanders and promised lawful trials with punishment. The motive for the coup remains unclear as authorities push legal actions.

Government foresees a smooth July 1 start for Medicare with 19 million Americans 65 and older eligible to enter government insured hospital care. About 704 hospitals will admit patients at midnight with 17.3 million holding doctor coverage. emergency admissions to federal hospitals allowed where non participating facilities exist.
In a joint declaration with Soviet leaders, Charles de Gaulle urged ending all foreign intervention in Vietnam and letting European problems be solved by European nations. Kosygin condemned US bombing near Hanoi and Haiphong, calling it a step toward defeat of aggressors while Tass labeled the strikes criminal and piratical. De Gaulle did not mention Vietnam in his Kremlin toast.

Washington AP reports the government closed fiscal year 1966 with a deficit near 3 billion or less, lower than January projections, amid higher spending and $100 billion in tax receipts. Some sources cite 2.5 billion, while Treasury sticks to 3.4 to 3.9 billion.
