Carter Evokes His Childhood at Plains Baptist Church
President elect Carter recalled his boyhood in an almost all black Plains area while hosting the son and daughter of a black AME bishop at Plains Baptist Church. Attended by two AME bishops and many black residents, it marked the largest black attendance since integration in 1976 as he readied for his January 20 inauguration. Carter noted praise for Griffin Bell named as attorney general and spoke of ongoing inaugural preparations and discussions with Bert Lance and Rep. Jack Brooks on government reorganization.
