Nixon signs symbolic bill to end longest U S dock strike
President Nixon signed legislation ending the 135 day West Coast dock strike led by the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union. About 13 000 striking members had ratified a contract, with some workers already back on the job. The act was mainly symbolic as arbitration was rejected in favor of permanent tools to handle transportation strikes.
