Hans Hofmann remembered as teacher and theoretician
Hans Hofmann who died at 85 in New York may be remembered more as a teacher and theoretician than a painter. He helped found the postwar abstract expressionist movement, taught in Munich and New York, and influenced a generation of artists including Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. Hofmann began in Munich, studied with influences from Van Gogh to Matisse, and later developed color and push pull tension ideas that shaped modern abstraction.
