New Government Policy On Pricing Is Assailed
A policy to dispose of surplus flue cured tobacco faces strong opposition from Malcolm B. Seawell of the Leaf Tobacco Exporters Association. He says the plan to sell surplus leaf by sealed bids and provide a five cent per pound export rebate disrupts the market and pushes buyers toward Stabilization pool stocks backed by CCC credits. He warns farmers will bear the cost of reduced competitive bidding and questions why changes occur after Stabilization’s success in selling surplus stocks.
