Twenty Four Picked Up After Abandoning Ship
A 501 foot tanker Padre Island ran aground on Hen and Chicken Shoals in the Bahamas. Twenty four crewmen abandoned ship and were picked up by the freighter Brazil and later transferred to the Coast Guard cutter Cape Knox bound for Miami Beach. The master and seven crew stayed aboard to salvage the vessel as it began taking on water. The incident occurred after the Padre Island left Freeport for New Orleans.

Johnson says more men needed but no reserves now

5300 men of the 4th Training Brigade at Fort Knox raised 2109 dollars to help pay Cheryl Darrence Lawrence's medical bills after an operation for a supine tumor. Four Die in North Carolina House Fire
In China Grove North Carolina a mother and three stepchildren died from asphyxiation in a seven room home fire that swept the residence on E Ketchie Street. Neighbors pulled two children from the blaze before 7 am as firemen found the others inside. Coroner Rufus Honeycutt identified the victims Nelson Ramsey 11 Rebecca Ramsey 8 and Janice Ramsey 5. The Ramsays accounted for two other children who were staying with Mrs Ramsey at her mother's home. Cause under investigation and not determined.
