Gas islands face shortages as pump prices trigger crackdown
Police arrested a man after he bought only 1.84 dollars worth of gas before the pump ran dry and threatened the station owner. Reports of overcharging during the Christmas weekend prompted warnings of a government crackdown. Acting Atty Gen. Robert Bork said the DOJ would seek restraining orders against price violators and ordered federal attorneys to act immediately. Stations are limited by the Cost of Living Council and must post prices. Across the country, many stations faced shortages as New Year closures loomed. Local dealers in Illinois, Arkansas, Georgia, New Mexico and New England reported reduced operations, with some closing days to conserve gas for regular customers. Public and industry groups urged withholding sales or raising margins within permitted limits.
