Prescribed Burning Gains Ground in Forestry Use
Dr. R E Martin of Virginia Tech and Ronald Stemple explain controlled or prescribed burning as a beneficial forestry practice. Virginia Tech students recently burned a 30 acre clear cut to remove debris and prepare for reforestation with pines, while discussions cover wildlife habitat, disease control, and cost benefits. Fire plans, weather awareness, and strict precautions are stressed to prevent loss of timberland and watersheds.

Fire destroys long running Blanch combine store and garage
A 46 year old Blanch general store and garage burned after explosions from a leaking gasoline tank touched off a blaze. Five people fled as flames engulfed the Potter and Allen operation. Fire crews from Providence Milton and Yanceyville used pond water to prevent spread and save nearby structures. Damage estimated at 25 000 to 30 000 with no insurance. The fire began when an acetylene torch ignited the tank during repairs on a Harris car. The safe survived and some records were saved. Potter runs the business with his family ownership shifting in 1963. The cause remained under investigation.
