Fire on Ship Threatens Ammo Cargo

Aboard the S S Neva West two holds of a burning ship were flooded to prevent ignition of 127 tons of ammunition. The vessel listed heavily toward port in the Mississippi River about 26 miles below New Orleans as crews fought the fire. Coast Guard said flames under control and 44 crew members remained onboard. Fire, possibly from spontaneous combustion in grain bins, prompted water flooding and escort by a fireboat and Coast Guard cutters to an anchorage near Belle Chasse.

Two U S Servicemen Freed by Viet Cong Endorses Peace

CBS interviewers quoted soldiers Smith and McClure saying they were misinterpreted while in Vietnam. The Viet Cong released a statement saying their actions were not the gravest crimes and that their release shows goodwill toward peace-loving Americans. Smith, from Steubenville Ohio, enlisted in 1955 and rejoined in 1960 after a medical discharge, captured November 24 1963 after four months in Vietnam. McClure, Chattanooga native, left school in 10th grade, married July 1 1963, sent to Vietnam four days later, captured November 23 1963 when a special forces camp fell.

Sea Gem oil rig sinks off Humber with crew unaccounted

The Sea Gem drilling rig sank 42 miles off the Humber River after a calm sea collapse. Franklin honors Thom as race relations pioneer athlete

The town of Franklin paid final respects to 18 year old Thom as Scruggs after a Christmas Eve car crash killed him. Three Alarm Fire at Park Avenue Injures Man in Richmond

A three alarm blaze swept two three story Fan District apartments at 1608 1610 Park Ave in Richmond Monday night. A 54 year old man was hospitalized with critical injuries after inhaling smoke while 22 residents evacuated to the street. Fire crews from 28 units brought the fire under control. two firefighters were treated at the scene. Stanford Kennedy, the injured resident, was moved to the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in critical condition. Damages were not yet estimated.
