Aboard the S S Neva West two holds of a burning ship were flooded to prevent ignition of 127 tons of ammunition. The vessel listed heavily toward port in the Mississippi River about 26 miles below New Orleans as crews fought the fire. Coast Guard said flames under control and 44 crew members remained onboard. Fire, possibly from spontaneous combustion in grain bins, prompted water flooding and escort by a fireboat and Coast Guard cutters to an anchorage near Belle Chasse.

Three Alarm Fire at Park Avenue Injures Man in Richmond
A three alarm blaze swept two three story Fan District apartments at 1608 1610 Park Ave in Richmond Monday night. A 54 year old man was hospitalized with critical injuries after inhaling smoke while 22 residents evacuated to the street. Fire crews from 28 units brought the fire under control. two firefighters were treated at the scene.
